event_description: Greetings fellow backcountry huntin, streamer throwin, bird dog runnin, BBQ eatin, RED WHITE AND BLUE BACKCOUNTRY AMERICANS!We’re less than a month away from the Fourth of July Hike to Hunt in Rothrock State Forest to celebrate the public lands we love to tour! Last year’s event, although limited in numbers, was a blast as Josh Martz and Aaron Luneke had a jolly good time getting their butts whipped climbing, talking elk, and general BSing on their way to the top. This year, we’d like to see a larger group in attendance—so we’re getting a head start on marketing, including offering ice cold incentives for those who join. The target trail will be Spruce Gap Trail, out of the Galbraith Gap Trailhead, near Boalsburg. The total hike distance will be around 5.5 miles, covering Spruce Gap Trail, Mid-State Trail, a small portion of the dirt road, and then finishing on Old Laurel Run. With that said, Spruce Gap is the damn Super Bowl of this public lands parade. It’s 1 mile of UP, climbing over 1,000ft for an average grade of 18%, with a max of 42%.This makes Mt. Nittany look like one of those kitten memes your aunt posts.Aaron will have 50lbs in his pack, one for every state—yes, even you Ohio. You can join him by bringing a pack of your own, although not required. What you should bring, however, is plenty of water, a snack, bug spray, YOUR BACKCOUNTRY AMERICAN PRIDE, and a rain jacket (weather depending). At the end of our salute to public lands, there will be a cooler with ice cold beverages waiting to shower us with that Teddy Roosevelt-Rocky Mountain stream pride (water as well). So join us in this Old Glory Hike to Hunt as we prep ourselves for the BBQ and cold ones that America’s birthday will surely provide—and to show some love for the best damn lands! Bonus points goes to anyone who dresses up like Apollo Creed from Rocky 4, or Uncle Teddy himself (no horses).
