Petition 2021-027: "Request to eliminate open hunting season for black bear until the Department’s bear management plan is updated." The Chapter has been very active on this issue over the past several years and recently helped to coordinate multiple coalition letters to rebuke the unfounded claims in the HSUS petition. Petition 2022-01: "Request to prohibit waterfowl hunting in specific areas along the shoreline near Benicia and Southhampton Bay"
The petition was submitted to prohibit waterfowl hunting on navigable waterways near the City of Benicia, a region that has been hunted for generations and that has never resulted in any hunting accidents or to threats to public safety. The petitioner mainly cites noise, disturbing the peace and perceived threats to other recreational users or public safety to justify a closure of hunting access to state-managed navigable waterways. Similar attempts to petition and block the public from hunting on navigable waterways were shut down by the Fish & Game Commission in Morro and Tomales Bays in years past. It is imperative to stand up for legal public access to hunt in Southhampton Bay, the Carquinez Straight and other waterways in Benicia in order to avoid losing more hunting access in the Bay Area and a dangerous precent being set elsewhere across the state.
We hope to see you in Oakland and/or at the Fish & Game Commission meeting!
