While Enroute to the AFI Priority landscape event on the north slope of the brooks range 10 AFI volunteers stoped to confirm the accuracy fo their rifles after the long plane/van ride and while they were there spent a few hours cleaning up trash at this well know public shooting area.   Due to the distance, the shooting area is from civilization most folks leave their targets, staples, cardboard boxes, and other trash strewn about.  AFI collected all available debris from the area (55 ...

AFI Snow Goose Hunt As Seen in Shooting Sportsman

Author: Trevor Hubbs
As Seen in the Sep-Oct Shooting Sportsman Magazine: “Snowbirds and No Words”   I sat up in my layout blind in an Arkansas mud field, amidst a thousand snow goose decoys.  The CEO of G&H Decoys from Henrietta Oklahoma sat up in the blind next to me and offered me a cigar.  Ray had driven in the night before and had been asleep in his blind snoring loudly 5 minutes before the legal shooting light.  Wide awake now he contentedly puffed on a victory cigar.    Ray and I found ourselves in ...

AFI Boundary Waters 2022

Author: Trevor Hubbs
As seen in Oct-Dec issue of FlyFisherman Magazine:   The first time I heard a loon call I was seven years old with my father in the Boundary Waters Wilderness area. The call was loud and lonely on the big lake; it was a sound so unlike anything I had ever heard. Tucked away from the chilly July night in my sleeping bag, the call echoed across the lake and permeated my father and I’s small tent. My first trip into the Boundary Waters was by many standards uneventful. We paddled into the ...

Washington AFI Converts a gear fisherman

What follows is a review of the AFI Fly Fishing 101 course in Washington State Summer 2023:     The goal of this workshop was to provide our Military community with hands on information for getting into fly fishing, taught at the “101” level.  Matt Dahl, an Army Vet and guide from Emerald Water Anglers in Seattle spearheaded one hell of an event.  He recruited another guide from his shop as well as Will Schwab, a local fly guide and another Army Vet from a rival shop; to round out a top ...

Operation Javelina

Author: Noah West
I received word in 2019 that the military was sending me to Fort Huachuca, Arizona. To save time among ourselves, my wife and I named the move “Operation Javelina.” Javelina - more properly “collared peccaries” - quickly became a symbol of the state of Arizona to my family. To ease them into moving from our Midwest Michigan home, we gave our children stuffed javelina for Christmas that year. We filled their heads with visions of these stinky, hairy critters and how lucky we were to move to ...

Da Tales of Da Tailgate

Author: Anonym
Wisconsin is rich with sports history and an enthusiastic fanbase. A staple of this state’s sports lore is the tailgate cookout  found prior to any Green Bay Packers, Bucks or Brewers game. Those who attend a traditional tailgate can be seen partaking in a game of cornhole (“Bags” if you’re a Wisconsinite)and enjoying a cold beverage, all while being adorned with their jerseys and the occasional cheese head. While representing the state of Wisconsin and BHA's Collegiate Program at this ...
