[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Caitlin Thompson
Montana BHA Member, Kim Blakowski shot her first elk and got engaged all in the same outing. This is her story.4:30 AM....we’re up, dressed, fed, horses are saddled and we are off – chasing the elusive elk.  My boyfriend Chris and I are setting-out on horseback, rifles in hand, hoping that we’ll need the horses to pack an elk out for us. This is my second year hunting elk and so far I have been unsuccessful in prior bow and rifle seasons. As we work our way up the mountain the terrain becomes ...

WA BHA Supports HB 1632: OHV Identification, Enforcement & Road Access

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Caitlin Thompson
Washington Backcountry Hunters & Anglers is working hard in support of HB 1632, a bill which would require all all-terrain vehicles (ATV’s) and utility terrain vehicles (UTV’s) to display a visible identification in exchange for limited legal road access. A portion of the revenue generated through the sale of license plates would be dedicated to a safety training program for OHV use. While the scope of road use that would be permitted by this legislation is still up for debate, there is ...

A view on mining: Industry makes big claims, but the reality is poverty, pollution

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Caitlin Thompson
The following article by MN BHA Co-Chair David A. Lien originally appeared in the March 12, 2013 issue of the Duluth Tribune.  Click here for the original version of this article. An unabashed pro-sulfide mining group, “Jobs for Minnesotans,” has been touting pie-in-the-sky jobs numbers and other contrived economic benefits while ignoring the current sustainable jobs that could be lost to the watershed-ruining toxic legacy sulfide mines always have left behind.Sulfide mining never has been ...

Petition for More Hunter Walking Trails

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Caitlin Thompson
MN Backcountry Hunters & Anglers has been working hard on a campaign to expand non-motorized hunting opportunities through the expansion of Minnesota's popular, but limited Hunter Walking Trails.  This program ensures Minnesotan hunters have opportunities to hunt undisturbed public lands that offer the same sense of tradition, solitude and challenge that generations of hunters have experienced before us.  Further, public lands managed for quiet, non-motorized use provide some reasonable ...

What is Backcountry?

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Caitlin Thompson
The following article was written by NM BHA Secretary/Treasurer, Peter Lupsha, with the aim of describing the evolving meaning of backcountry. This topic has been discussed in the Journal and round the campfire on more than one occasion. Backcountry in New Jersey, Delaware or most of the Middle Atlantic States differs from backcountry in the Rocky Mountain West. And, backcountry in Alaska is, of course, is in a class by itself.   It is conceptually easier to think of backcountry in these ...
