Montana BHA Shoots Down Drones

Author: Montana BHA
Over a year ago MT BHA recognized that rapidly revolving and availability of unmanned aerial vehicle (drones) technology threatened fair chase hunting.  GPS and real time cameras, including infrared cameras can easily be attached.  Drones are more common and cheaper than ever.  They can be easily flown at night to scout for hunting the next day.  They can be used to move wildlife to aid hunting.  We have seen too often that delaying regulating technology leads to no action by agencies, and ...

The Year in Review from Idaho BHA

2/18/2014Dear Idaho Backcountry Hunters and Anglers,Hopefully you were able to get out and enjoy some success last fall, however you measure it, and by now are planning your next adventure into the backcountry. I was fortunate to be able to spend time with my brother, son, and father-in-law hunting last fall, and the experience left me committed to working to ensure that future generations have the opportunity to share the backcountry with the people that are important to them.As we move ...

Idaho BHA Defends Cervid Disease Testing of Domestic Elk

Good morning Idaho BHA members,I would like to take this opportunity to draw your attention to some legislation being considered by the Agricultural Affairs Committee next Tuesday (2/18) at 8:00 a.m. that if passed, could have a devastating impact on our big game herds. Currently, 100% of dead domestic elk must be tested for chronic wasting disease (CWD). House Bill 431 would remove this common sense measure. As written, House Bill 431 requires that only 10% of dead domestic elk- selected ...

Letter: OHV Commission Ethics Issues

February 15, 2014 Dear Governor Sandoval, I am writing on behalf of the Nevada Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers (BHA) concerning a current ethics issue related to the OHV Commission grant process. BHA was a participant of the many long years in the struggle to pass an OHV registration bill. Finally, when we came together as a disparate group of "stakeholders" to craft a bill we could all live with and accomplish goals we had in common, we were able to get a bill passed. Our BHA ...

Fencelines

Author: Tim Brass
By Tim Brass   It was lunchtime and I had managed to escape from the computer, put on a pair of cross-country skis and take a few laps around the perimeter of my landlord’s property. It was an hour that any outdoor enthusiast dreams of: walking out the front door, grabbing a rod or gun or pair of skis and getting-after-it - without having to pile in the truck or compete with others for a shot at snagging a rising trout, shooting a cupping goose, skiing fresh, untouched snow. As I circled ...

Letter: Crooked River Canyon land transfer good for Central Oregon

The following Op-Ed by Brian Jennings was orginally published in the Bend Bulletin on February 2, 2014.Since 2008, the Trust for Public Land has been quietly working to transfer a privately held 101-acre parcel of land along the Crooked River Canyon to the Bureau of Land Management. The transfer, using money from the Land & Water Conservation Fund, would provide a seamless access point for outdoor enthusiasts, thus allowing greater public access to this Central Oregon treasure. For anglers, ...

LETTER: MT BHA Asks Governor Bullock To Ensure Sage Grouse Protections Supported By Science

Author: Montana BHA
Dear Governor Bullock Re Montana Sage Grouse Habitat Conservation Strategy The 350 members of Montana Backcountry Hunter and Anglers include many well informed hunters who are concerned about the sustainability of sage grouse populations and their habitats.   As an organization we have previously commented on the importance of a science based strategy in this planning process and suggested a number of habitat considerations to the Advisory council.
