Custer Gallatin National Forest keeps moving goalposts on public access in the Crazy Mountains

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Kathryn QannaYahu
By Kathryn QannaYahu - June 26, 2019 - Originally published in the Missoulian In 2015, a hunter experiencing attempted obstruction in the Crazies wrote to U.S. Sen. Steve Daines, who then wrote to CGNF Supervisor Mary Erickson. She replied, repeating Salwasser's position. Instead of supporting the Yellowstone District Ranger's adherence to FS policy of defending and maintaining our public access in the Crazies, the CGNF removed the ranger in June 2017; after public outcry reinstated him ...

Bonds of the Wild

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Allen Crater
You hear it all the time, hell, I’ve even said it myself: “it goes fast”. But nothing can really prepare you for how fast life actually goes. How you can be in your twenties and blink and you’re in your forties, blink again and sixty will be staring you in the face. Or how fast the life of your favorite dog can pass by, or how quickly your kids can grow up literally before your eyes. It goes fast. All of it. When I was younger, my thoughts were always to the future, to what’s next. As I get ...

Idaho BHA announces 2019 program for new hunters

Author: Idaho BHA
Based on the success of Idaho BHA's first "Learn to Hunt" program in 2018, the chapter has announced it will expand the program in 2019.  The program is part of BHA's broader "Hunting For Sustainability" effort.  This particular program is aimed to recruit new hunters and to accelerate the learning curve before the hunters take to the field.  This program is specifically designed for new or inexperienced hunters over age 18.  For 2019, Idaho BHA has expanded the capacity to 20 attendees, up ...

Arizona BHA Policy Recap

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Arizona BHA
The 54th session of the Arizona legislature concluded this May, and, thanks to the engagement and perseverance of hunters, anglers and other outdoor enthusiasts across the state, our voices were heard, and our longstanding public lands heritage remains intact. There were ups and downs throughout the session, but ultimately, we came out ahead. The Arizona BHA board and policy chairs kept close tabs on HB2557, which was amended to include bad public land policy language from a previous bill, ...

Catch and Feast: Fly Fishing for Trout in the Chattahoochee National Forest

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Christopher L. Jenkins
"let me rephrase that, I really like to eat the trout that I catch." I have always had a conflicting relationship with fishing. I love to fly fish for trout in the mountains; something to do with casting to an exact spot, allowing the fly to drift as if it was an insect, and the absolute beauty of trout and the mountainous landscapes they live in. But I also like to eat fish, let me rephrase that, I really like to eat the trout that I catch. When I started fly fishing in college up in New ...

The Joy of Mountain Goat Viewing in the Uinta Mountains

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Ashley Amundsen
Anyone who has hiked Mount Timpanogos has likely seen (and been stared down) by a mountain goat somewhere along the trail. I didn’t know this was a normal occurrence when I did this hike for the first time in August 2018.  Coming around a bend in the trail, I peered between tree branches, tall grasses and scraggly bushes into a shallow gully and saw snowy white haunches and a nub-tail.  My brain interpreted this sight as “polar bear butt”.  Mightily confused, I stopped questioning my sanity ...

California Chapter leads backpacking class, Hike to Hunt in San Gabriel Mtns. National Monument

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Eric Hanson
Backcountry Hunters and Anglers’ members have a passion for backcountry recreation. Still, they have a wide range of experience when it comes to backpacking, and incorporating hunting or fishing into the same. To help familiarize people with backpacking, and increase the skill levels of those already having a solid knowledge, the California Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers organized a backcountry introduction and shakeout in the San Gabriel National Monument on June 8th. The ...
