OPINION: Backcountry Hunters & Anglers: Daines, Gianforte must insist on full funding for LWCF

Originally published in the Missoula Current Last month, Sen. Steve Daines visited the City Club in Missoula to chat with constituents about issues important to Montanans. A priority issue to hunters and anglers across Montana is the Land and Water Conservation Fund. One of the nation’s most successful tools for increasing public access to our lands and waters, LWCF was permanently reauthorized earlier this year, with overwhelming bipartisan support (92-8 in the Senate and 363-62 in the ...

OPINION: Access in Montana’s Crazy Mountains a big concern

Author: Kevin Farron
Originally published in the Great Falls Tribune For those willing to hoof it long distances on foot, Montana’s Crazy Mountains offer solitude, rewarding views and dozens of alpine lakes full of hungry trout. They also provide some of the best mountain goat hunting opportunities in the state. But the checkerboarded land ownership – even in the alpine – as well as illegally blocked public trails in the foothills create a unique set of challenges for anyone lucky enough to draw a tag. Goat ...

Idaho BHA weighs in on BLM management of nearly 800,000 acres of public land

Author: Idaho BHA
Members of the Idaho chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers crafted and submitted a letter to the BLM regarding the Four Rivers Resource Management Plan (RMP).  The letter was part of the official public comment period for the RMP which will guide future management of approximately 780,000 acres of BLM-managed public lands in SW Idaho. It is not unusual for an RMP to go decades before being replaces with a new plan, so this was a rare opportunity to help steer the BLM plan towards smart ...

Rendering Bear Fat For Baking

Author: Laura Farron
If you’re lucky enough to kill a bear, as my husband Kevin was, do yourself a favor and pack out as much of the fat as you can. Spring bear or fall bear, I’ve had both and can confidently say both are delicious. Though many will insist that fall bear fat tastes the best, the only thing I can say for sure is that fall bear will yield more of it. Bear fat is pure gold. It will give you the flakiest, best tasting pie crust for sweet or savory pies, and it makes a darn good biscuit. I’ve heard ...

Clean Water Rule 101

Hunters and anglers united to oppose a recent decision by the Trump administration to roll back the 2015 Clean Water Rule and leave vulnerable to pollution and destruction roughly 50 percent of wetlands and 60 percent of stream miles in the United States. The 2015 rule clarified and restored consistency to the federal Clean Water Act (CWA) and helped protect millions of acres of wetlands and headwater streams critical to fish and wildlife populations, flood control and healthy drinking ...

BHA Podcast & Blast, Ep. 59: Utah Roadless Lands at Risk?

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert is petitioning the U.S. Department of Agriculture to develop a new, state-specific Roadless Rule that would impact 4 million acres of National Forest lands in Utah. Does anybody in Utah want to protect roadless lands, which offer some of the world’s best backcountry hunting, hiking, fishing, skiing; some of the world’s most scenic places; and some of our most valuable fish and wildlife habitat? Yes, they do. Two of them are Utah BHA board member Andrew Wike, a hunter, ...

Fall 2019 New York Chapter News

The summer heat hasn’t stopped BHA-NY from working hard for our public lands. Over the last few months, BHA-NY has been spreading the good-word across the state at various events and through good ole’ fashioned boots-on-the-ground conservation. In June, chapter Co-Chair Garrett Burback and board member Glen Stratton tabled at Spey Nation on the Salmon River and signed up nearly a dozen new members. We also held several cleanups across the state. Under the leadership of board member ...
