Camp Grayling Expansion in Northern Michigan

Camp Grayling Expansion A recent proposal by the Michigan National Guard to more than double the amount of public lands leased from the state of Michigan is fast becoming a hot topic for conservationists in Michigan. At its current footprint of 230 square miles, the Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center is the largest National Guard training facility in the country. The installation is proposing to add 162,000 acres (253 square miles) of public lands to its lease, more than doubling ...

CWD Research and Management Act

Chronic wasting disease represents one of the greatest threats to wild deer and other cervids in Michigan and the rest of the US. This is also a threat to the quality of our hunting opportunities.  The Michigan Chapter has recently started a Take Action for Michigan residents to help entice Senator Stabenow (D-MI) to push for the hearing to advance S.4111, the Chronic Wasting Disease Research and Management Act. Senator Stabenow is the Chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and ...

Michigan BHA Chapter Removes Fences for Forest Service

In early 2020, the U.S. Forest Service and Backcountry Hunters & Anglers began to work together to identify projects east of the Mississippi that would be ideal for BHA volunteers to complete. During these discussions the USFS identified a project that would remove four miles of barbwire fencing in the Huron-Manistee National Forest near Glennie, Michigan. The Michigan chapter was more than happy to help on such an important project.   “We were really excited to help on this project, and it ...

Michigan Chapter Breaks Down Proposition 20-1

The Michigan chapter of BHA is the voice for our wild public lands, waters, and wildlife in our great state and seeks to inform members on issues affecting our members as well as public lands and waters in Michigan.  Currently at issue on the upcoming ballot is Proposition 20-1, which would change the definition of projects eligible for funding by one of the foremost public land acquisition funds in Michigan — the Michigan Natural Resource Trust Fund. Introducing the Public Land Owner Stewardship Fund: Five Clubs Receive Funding for Local Stewardship Projects

BHA often touts the boots-on-the-ground, grassroots efforts of our organization and perhaps nothing embodies this more than the stewardship efforts of our college clubs. As collective owners of millions of acres of public land throughout North America it’s important that we take care of the land in the same way we care for our rifles, shotguns, and fly rods. Each year, clubs complete two work service projects in their local community. These projects build tangible field skills, leadership, ...

One Cast, Everyone Knows the Rules

As we walked further upstream, the location Sam described began to materialize. He is never one to be quiet, and he had been talking about this spot all morning. As we continued the trek, I could not help but appreciate where we were and what we were doing. Surrounded by mountains, hunting brown trout with salmon flies in the back channels of the Madison River. This was a trip that we looked forward to all year that was nearly spoiled by COVID-19. We had rain and 40-degree weather for the ...

Student Leaders Step Up and Help Pass the Great American Outdoors Act

Today, the House passed the Great American Outdoors Act with a 310-107 vote. It now makes its way to the President's desk for a final signature. BHA members across the U.S. made their voices heard including many of our student leaders. Amid navigating summer jobs with long and odd hours, students found the time to submit videos, make phone calls, post on social media, speak on our live Crowdcast events, and most importantly call their representatives.  It's not always easy to speak up, but ...

Michigan highlights 2019 and looks forward to 2020

Your Michigan Board just finished our annual planning retreat and we want to share a few things with all of you about this past year and the upcoming plans that we have scheduled for 2020. First, as many of you already know, Michigan was honored as Chapter of the Year this past spring at the National Rendezvous in Boise, Idaho. Congratulations to each and every one of you for the role you played.  None of that recognition could come without members that are always willing to step up, ...
