Colorado Hunter Reports Illegal OHV Use, Forgoes Reward

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Walker Conyngham
Troy Shenk and son with a dandy Colorado timber buck In late October, Colorado BHA member Troy Shenk took his 15-year-old son out for mule deer in the mountains outside Paonia. En route, Shenk witnessed two other hunters operating ATVs on a route closed to motorized use, in clear violation of posted signs. With his knowledge of the regulations and the impacts of illegal OHV use on habitat, big game populations and the experiences of other hunters, Shenk chose to report this illegal activity ...

Bachelor Party, Cornhusker Birds

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Joey Bell
My bachelor party was for sure going to be unorthodox.  For one reason, I didn’t care at all to spend a few days at a beach getting drunk and another, there are very few people I’d want to spend more than a few days with.  I had told Jacob (my best man) that I wanted to go turkey hunting in Nebraska for my bachelor party.  I wanted a Merriam’s. We had invited a few folks along but to be honest, I was glad it was just Jacob and me.  Also, not many people wanted to take off a week and a half ...

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Wolf Gumerman
Is sustainability an overused word? Maybe; but it is a critical concept in the hunting and fishing world. From November 6th to November 8th BHA’s Arizona Chapter and the Northern Arizona University (NAU) BHA Collegiate Club sponsored a Hunting for Sustainability (H4S) workshop for new hunters.  After working on firearm safety and practicing our shotgunning skills at the Northern Arizona Shooting Range, we headed to our camp on the Coconino National Forest near Sedona, Arizona to hunt quail ...

Support Selenium Standards for Lake Koocanusa & the Kootenai River

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Molly VandeVoort
Water binds us all together, and in the case of northwest Montana, our community is living with the downstream effects of the upriver environment. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks found selenium levels were increasing in seven species of fish in Lake Koocanusa between 2008 and 2013. For this reason and many others, Montana BHA strongly supports the state of Montana's proposed water quality limits to protect Lake Koocanusa and the Kootenai River from selenium contamination from Canada’s coal ...

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Doug Krings
The Montana Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers is offering a reward for $1,000 for information leading to a conviction in a recent moose poaching incident south of Lewistown. A cow moose was shot and left to waste near Sure Enough Road in the Little Snowy Mountains in Central Montana. This is a popular road for hunters accessing BLM and DNRC lands in the area. FWP only offers four moose tags per year in Unit 496, where the incident took place. The 10-year average is 2.9 moose harvests ...
