Caribou Pizza Pockets

Author: Jenny Ly
Believe it or not, two years later, I still have caribou meat leftover from my first backpack hunt. Down to the last few packages of grind, and a craving for healthy comfort food (is there such a thing?), I created an easy pizza pocket recipe. The McCain pizza pockets were a childhood favorite of mine. I have fond memories of my father slightly burning them in the oven and having to remake a second batch. Thinking back on things, I think he purposely burnt them so he could have the extra ...

E-Bikes & Elk: A Bad Combination

Author: David Lien
A recent story in The Aspen Times (“Traditional cyclists, e-bikers clash over new trail rules across Colorado,” 5/17/20) included some observations from Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) State Policy Director, Tim Brass, about his elk hunt last fall. Tim borrowed a friend’s e-bike during the hunt and, not surprisingly, increased the amount of terrain he was able to cover.[1] However, later he reflected on the hunt (in “E-Bikes And The Backcountry,” Spring 2020 Backcountry Journal).  “A ...

Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey

This title is part of BHA's Jim Posewitz Digital Library: Required Reading for Conservationists   When I think of Desert Solitaire I remember a little riverside camp I scraped out of the grass and brush by the Colorado, not far from Moab, Utah, near the mouth of a canyon that’s since been re-named Grandstaff. I was a year out of college and living on public lands: national forests in South Dakota and Wyoming, national monuments in Arizona, BLM lands in Utah, for seasons at a time. Edward ...

PA BHA: E-bikes appropriate for motorized routes only on public land

The increased popularity of e-bikes has created new demand for areas to ride on public lands in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Chapter acknowledges that e-bikes, like other forms of motorized transportation, can serve as a useful tool for hunters, anglers and other recreationists when used responsibly and legally.  E-bikes, which incorporate motors, allow the rider to travel at faster speeds and greater distances than traditional mountain bikes, and they have different patterns and ...

BHA Podcast & Blast, Ep. 78: Clay Newcomb, journalist and owner of Bear Hunting Magazine

“Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” are not just words in the Declaration of Independence. They are words to live by, and perhaps nobody is living them harder or better right now than Clay Newcomb of the Arkansas Ozarks, owner of Bear Hunting Magazine. Clay is a mule trainer, a bear, whitetail and small game hunting obsessive, a dog man, archer, writer and filmmaker. But he is first and foremost a man of faith and family, and that fundamental strength is the foundation of a ...

Mountain Merriam’s Therapy (& Botched Shots)

Author: David Lien
How would you react to being told that the L-4 and L-5 vertebrae in your lower back need to be fused together, held in place with four outsized screws? The L4-L5 are the two lowest vertebrae of the spine. Together with the intervertebral disc, joints nerves and soft tissues, they provide a variety of functions, including supporting the upper body and allowing trunk motion in multiple directions. Due to its heavy load-bearing function and wide range of flexibility, the L4-L5 is susceptible to ...

Ohio BHA Comments on HB 553

Restricting the Ohio Division of Wildlife as the state agency to manage the very resources it is charged with managing is a misstep. Singling out the Chief of the Division of Wildlife and removing his or her decision-making authority in this or other issues is inappropriate and opens the door for management decisions to be more than politically-influenced than is currently the case.
