Vietnamese Venison Pho

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Oliver Classen
Text and Photos by Oliver Classen and Jacob Lam Winter is a time for heavy stews and roasts that keep you feeling full and primed for bitter winds, but we are entering a lighter, brighter season. Pho is a perfect dish for this transition. Hot broth and sliced steak will keep you cozy enough to brave a couple more March snowstorms or cold rains, but aromatic mint and finely cut scallions are a harbinger for more hospitable weather. Pho is a traditional Vietnamese dish made from beef broth, ...

Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Zachary Williams

This title is part of BHA's Jim Posewitz Digital Library: Required Reading for Conservationists   Outwardly, Braiding Sweetgrass appears to be a book about plants, viewed through Dr. Kimmerer’s own tandem lens of her degree in botany and Anishinaabe traditional environmental knowledge. Indeed, she weaves these different ways of seeing the world together as tenderly as she describes the eponymous braiding of sweetgrass, but I’d be doing us all a disservice to imply this book is just a ...

Maine BHA Policy Update March 2021

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: New England BHA Chapter
In the first two months of 2021, the Maine BHA team identified over 75 bills introduced to the Legislature that could impact hunting and fishing, land conservation, and public access.  As of March 1, BHA submitted testimony on 9 bills and was working on several others, with more expected to come as the bills are printed and full details can be reviewed. In a move that reflects the growing respect for BHA’s influence and stance on policy issues, BHA has been invited to join a bi-weekly ...

Join NM BHA in Opposing the Public Land Trapping Ban

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Joel Gay
An all-out ban on public lands trapping throughout New Mexico known as the “Wildlife Conservation & Public Safety Act” inched closer Friday night when the Senate Judiciary Committee voted in favor, 5-1. But now,  "time" is on trappers’ side. SB32 now goes to the full Senate for approval. If the bill passes, it still must get through one or more House committees and a vote by the full House. With the Legislature scheduled to adjourn in just two weeks, that schedule will be tough to ...

Bill proposes landowner-sponsored elk licenses, extra bonus points

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Montana BHA
The House Fish, Wildlife & Parks Committee is taking up a bill Tuesday carried by Speaker of the House Wylie Galt that would institute new landowner-sponsored elk hunting licenses in districts at population objectives and a bonus point boost for hunters deciding to hunt cow elk on private land in over-objective districts. House Bill 505 was borne from a concept developed internally at Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. The bill aims to incentivize private landowners and hunters to work to ...

PA's Middle Creek WMA : Magical migrations and hunting opportunities

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Pennsylvania BHA
By Aaron Hepler   As I sat in the bay window of my parents’ house, I couldn’t help but notice the light was fading. It was odd since it was sunny a few minutes prior. I looked up at the sky as the shadows grew. The image of hundreds and hundreds of geese met my eyes. Snow geese and Canada geese alike, with other species of waterfowl in the mix. Landing in fields and taking to the air at random times, birds covered the ground and sky wherever I could see. This was a familiar sight for me and ...

2021 Legislative Recap - Transmittal Break

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Montana BHA
We're halfway through the legislative session, meaning it's time to catch our breath, lick our wounds, and get a clearer picture of where things stand. At this 45-day mark the non-revenue bills with a good chance of becoming law will have needed to have passed through one chamber and sent to the other for round II. Much of our testimony this session has been delivered remotely, but we've been in the halls of the Capitol lobbying and delivering in-person testimony there too.  We certainly ...

Work To Be Done To Save Pine Tree

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Josh Kaywood
The Arkansas Chapter continues to work on multiple fronts to keep the University of Arkansas Pine Tree Research Station open and accessible by the public.  We need your help now to continue this work. Working directly Senator Ron Caldwell, Arkansas BHA supports SB 358 which is currently under consideration in the Arkansas Senate.  SB 358 is a “sunshine law” that would create a formal process for notifying the public and local stakeholders before any state agency or public university tries to ...
