Colorado Hunters and Anglers - Vote No on Amendment 78

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Robert Shettel
Soon we will all fill out our ballots (or head to the polls) to join in the 2021 election. One of the initiatives we are asked to decide is Amendment 78, officially known as the Custodial Funds Appropriations Initiative. Custodial funds are state revenues that are not generated through taxes. Custodial funds come from federal grants, pension funds and court-approved settlement funds. There is currently a lawsuit seeking to either remove the question from the ballot or have the votes go ...

BHAers Haul Thousands of Bags of Trash off Our Public Lands in September

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Thomas Plank
This September - Public Lands Month - public land owners from across North America heeded BHA’s call to clean up our public lands by hauling off more than 4,400 garbage bags of trash as part of the 3rd Annual Public Land Pack-Out.  Through a combination of individual efforts and 43 chapter-organized events, we were able to leave our public lands in much better shape than we found them.    A big BHA high five goes out to all who pitched in. And a special thanks goes out to our friends at ...

Montana fishing advocates, businesses call for river preservation task force

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Montana BHA
For those wanting the state to take more action to preserve coldwater fisheries in southwestern Montana rivers, this summer demonstrated the need. But the governor has yet to heed their call for a task force to tackle the problem. This week, a panel of four advocates for Montana’s rivers, fish and the fishing industry discussed the effect of this summer’s heat and drought on streamflows and fish, and suggested some ideas the state needs to consider to maintain Montana’s reputation as a ...

Primary Zone is the heart of EPLUS action

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Joel Gay
Third in a series Almost every state in the West has a private land hunting program for elk – Arizona being the exception – but it’s hard to imagine any program more complicated than EPLUS. We’ve posted a copy of the EPLUS Rule in our EPLUS Library, and we encourage hunters to read it just to see how difficult it is for the average person to understand. But to save your eyesight we’ll do a guided tour of the rule to explain how EPLUS works. Unfortunately, EPLUS is so complicated that even ...

BHA Podcast & Blast, Ep. 116: Unraveling the Commercialization of Big Game in New Mexico

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Arkansas BHA Chapter
Everybody knows that wildlife in the United States is owned by all of us. Elk, deer and other species are held in the public trust, period. But what happens when publicly owned big game is commercialized – and when hunting opportunity for public wildlife is sold to the highest bidder? What happens when so-called “private land” licenses can be used on public land? Some Western states are grappling with those questions now, but New Mexico public land elk hunters have been living under these ...

BHAers Don't Camp

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Wendi Rank
Guys, we need to talk.  I was there. At Muster. Camping right beside you.  Which is why we need to talk.  You guys know you don’t have to camp to be in BHA, right?  I’m serious. You can think places you can’t walk around in socks are not for you and still be a BHA member. You can think Gifford Pinchot and Bronson Pinchot are probably cousins because it cracks you up and still be a BHA member.   And you can never, ever camp and still be a BHA member.  Look at me. I’m a BHA member. A BHA ...

Managing Montana's elk wealth is causing heartburn for landowners, FWP and hunters

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Montana BHA
Elk have become a political animal in Montana. For decades, predators like grizzly bears and wolves were the ones to incite political passion. Yet slowly, as elk populations have grown and herds have re-established a presence where they weren’t seen for a century, elk have entered Montana’s political crosshairs. It’s a turn of events unimaginable 100 years ago, when sportsmen’s groups worked with the state’s wildlife agency to capture and transfer Yellowstone elk to rebuild ...
