Real Hunting

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Gary VandenLangenberg

This story was originally published in the Fall 2021 issue of Backcountry Journal.   By Gary VandenLangenberg   With a natural love of animals and a curiosity for all things wild, my oldest son Forest grew up like many of you. Our yard and the cattail filled ditch behind our house was his arena of exploration and discovery, he and his younger brother Lake constantly flipping over our landscape stones looking for worms, pill bugs and other creepy crawlies. When Forest was 5 years old, I ...

Hunting for Sustainability Ramps Up Efforts in Montana

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Kylie Schumacher
BHA's Hunting for Sustainability program has its roots in Montana, so it's no surprise that the program has seen some of its most impactful achievements here. Working in tandem with the Collegiate Program, H4S gives college students to knowledge and skills to hunt safely, legally, and ethically. This semester, both programs celebrated the addition of a brand new H4S workshop focused on learning to hunt waterfowl at the Teller Wildlife Refuge. With an eye on expanding these programs to new ...

An Old Law Gets a New Look to Help Prevent CWD in California

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Jake Wright
A few weeks ago, my flawless run as a law-abiding hunter and angler in the State of California came to an end.  Now as someone who values conservation and takes fish and game laws in any state seriously, this was a serious dent in my street / backcountry cred – how could I have possibly dropped the ball?  Well – there’s good and bad news here; the good news is this little mistake has, in turn, lead to this blog post - so hopefully it raises some compliance awareness, but the bad news is that ...

The Ambler Road: A Threat to the Brooks Range Wilderness

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Alaska BHA
When I was young, my family and I were camped above the shore of Walker Lake preparing for a 10-day raft trip that would take us down the Kobuk River, to the village of Kobuk. Walker Lake sits just inside the Gates of the Arctic National Park, nestled into a valley on the south side of the Brooks Range, about 75 air miles to the west of Bettles. The mountains rising up on either side of the lake shore are covered in white spruce and tall shrubs that give way to tundra and rock as they gain ...

Great news! Lac Qui Parle Land Sale Approved!

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Minnesota BHA Chapter
The Minnesota state land exchange board just approved the sale of 80 acres of land owned by Jo’s Family Farm, LLC to the DNR today. This ends an over two year battle by the landowner to sell his land to the state of Minnesota.  This is a major victory for both private landowners who want to sell land to units of government and public landowners who need access to quality public land for hunting fishing and outdoor recreation. Your Minnesota BHA board and chapter members provided both ...

What do we owe the individuals?

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Brandon Ellis

This article, produced by Orion, originally appeared in the Fall 2021 issue of Backcountry Journal. Join BHA, support your public lands and waters and get four issues a year of Backcountry Journal in your mailbox, and unlimited digital access to current and back issues.   By Corey Ellis   Generally, the hunting community and wildlife managers focus on entire populations of animals and game species. Yet, we as hunters and anglers rarely make decisions that affect entire populations. But ...

Venison and Ramp Sandwiches

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Zachary Williams
By Sam Dhaliwal and Oliver Classen This recipe is a new take on an old favorite. This steak sandwich highlights two of the tastiest ingredients in the woods--deer and ramps. Savory venison is complemented by the tangy, sweet, and slightly spicy pickled ramps in a combination that is simple, fresh, and delicious. Hopefully, the venison ramp sandwich will give you a break from the monotony of sauteing your ramps and turning every big hunk of deer meat in the freezer into a pot ...

Colorado Backcountry Hunters & Anglers Appoint Habitat Watch Volunteer

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: David Lien
The Colorado chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers recently appointed Matt Roberts to serve as a Habitat Watch Volunteer (HWV) for the White River National Forest. Matt was born and raised in Colorado (3rd generation).  “I started life in a small town in eastern Colorado,” he said. “At 11 years old we moved to the northern Front Range where I have spent the majority of my life.” Matt started fishing with his dad as soon as he could carry a pole. “We didn’t have any water near us, but I ...
