Good Things Come to Those Who Pick Up Trash

Author: Jacob Mannix
I’m a better angler than hunter and I’m a better thinker than angler, but to be honest, I do not hold the bar very high for the latter. This ranking of skill probably has to do with the fact that I spend a fair amount of time fishing and a fair amount of time hunting and during both of those pursuits I frequently find myself in situations where the only reasonable conclusion I can draw is that the fish or game I’m chasing simply doesn’t exist. This leaves ample time for me to practice my ...

Rhode Island BHA 2021 Policy Roundup

2021 has been an interesting year, and while we did not host in-person events during the first half of the year the New England BHA team was hard at work standing up for the interests of hunters and anglers in Rhode Island. Below you’ll find updates on our work at the Rhode Island General Assembly and other state agencies from this year.   Issue: Shoreline Access For the second year in a row bills were introduced to clarify where the boundary of Rhode Islanders’ shoreline access lies. OPINION: State needs cold-water fisheries task force, plan

Water in Montana has a tough job. It must irrigate our fields, float our boats, spin our turbines and brew our beers. It must also provide a home for fish and habitat for wildlife. As a result, water law has a tough job too — it has to balance private rights and public interest. To promote early development, Montanans made water property. This allows individuals and businesses to invest in water-necessary endeavors with confidence. We then decided that, in times of scarcity, the users here ...

From the Chair On a recent trip to the Saranac Lake region I noticed that there was some color in the mountains and the mornings were crisp. Mad River Cleanup: Conservation organizations team up for a better river

On a warm July Sunday, a group of people gathered in the morning light near the banks of the Mad River, not to fish or float, but to pick up trash. This joint effort included Ohio BHA, Madmen Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Ohio Women on the Fly, and Champaign County Farmland Preservation, and was attended by approximately 30-40 people, along with 3 or 4 dogs. The oldest of these organizations, the Madmen Chapter of Trout Unlimited, has cared for these waters for many years. Their projects have ...

Good Luck on Sunday: Big Change for Public Land Hunters in NC

Author: Josh Kaywood
Hunting season looks a lot different in North Carolina this year. For the first time in over 150 years, residents and visitors can hunt on Sundays on public lands across the state. While some restrictions remain in place and not all public property will be open to Sunday hunting, the new changes seen in this year’s Rules & Regulations Digest 2021-2022 published by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission have come on the heels of prolonged advocacy and active participation in the ...

Alaska Subsistence Policy and WSA21-01

Author: Jacob Mannix
For those people who had been planning a trip to hunt the incredible region of northwest Alaska, home to the Western Arctic Caribou Herd, they probably got wind of the proposal to close federal public lands to moose and caribou hunting in game management units 23 and 26A. This proposal would have affected all non-federally qualified users (NFQUs), or simply put but not entirely accurate, anyone who does not live within that region. On June 16th the Federal Subsistence Board held a special ...
