Backcountry Memories: The Ridgeline Bull

By Dominic Corsini   Ralph Waldo Emerson is often credited for saying “life is a journey, not a destination.” I cannot help but feel connected to that saying at this moment. However, this story isn’t necessarily about life itself, but more so the somewhat arduous process of planning, and then embarking on, an out-of-state backcountry hunting trip. Landowner access agreements stir up commission, elk hunters

Author: Montana BHA
Divisions among Montanans regarding how elk should be managed on private lands were center stage in a short Sept. 24 Fish and Wildlife Commission meeting. At issue was the commission’s approval of 10 free either-sex elk tags to three Montana ranch owners in exchange for limited public hunting access to their lands. “These are, in the minds of a lot of Montanans, heading toward privatization and commercialization of wildlife, which … is the death of our fish and wildlife management,” ...

Colorado Hunters & Anglers Applaud Movement on Wildlife Corridor Conservation

Author: Tim Brass
Today, the state of Colorado took an important step toward advancing conservation measures of critical big game corridors through the release of a report, “Opportunities to Improve Sensitive Habitat and Movement Route Connectivity for Colorado's Big Game Species.” This report was crafted in response to Gov. Jared Polis’ executive order on the conservation of big game winter range and migration corridors, which was adopted in August 2019. To build upon this momentum, Gov. Polis officially ...

OPINION: FWP issues trophy elk permits to Wilks brothers

At last, the Wilks Brothers got what they wanted but money couldn’t buy: the guaranteed opportunity to hunt trophy elk on their ranch. In a hastily arranged Zoom meeting at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, September 24th - to accommodate the personal international travel of Commissioner Walsh - and with minimal advanced public notice, the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission gifted coveted elk permits to large landowners. The Wilks Brothers and their designees will now receive eight permits to hunt ...

EVENT RECAP: Mount Jumbo Public Lands Day Clean Up

On September 25, National Public Lands Day, the Montana Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers worked with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and Tangle Free Montana to pull a half mile of dilapidated, unruly, wildlife-impeding, rickety and rotten fence from the Mount Jumbo Wildlife Area just outside Missoula. About 20 people gave up a beautiful Saturday in September (during archery and upland season!) to take on the challenge. The group was varied, being made up of BHA volunteers and board ...
