Wyoming Chapter How-To Tuesday: Streamer Fishing

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Tanner Belknap
Learning to streamer fish is intimidating. Piles of big, flashy, expensive flies at the front of every fly shop tempt you as you grab a few nymphs and dries. Bathroom walls covered with grip'n grins with massive browns make you want to try it - but which fly would you pick? What size line would you use? How would you cast one of these monstrosities? The answer is...most flies will work, but some will be better depending on the day. I'm far from an expert but the hundreds of streamer fish I ...

Is Hunter Recruitment Really Hurting Hunting Opportunity in the West? Here’s One R3 Coordinator’s Take

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Paul Kemper
DJ and I rumbled down the dusty, wash-boarded road en route to where we planned to camp for the opening weekend of Montana’s rifle season. We passed glammed-out campers, generator-powered chest freezers, fleets of four wheelers, and license plates that seemed to be from everywhere but Montana. DJ lives in northwest Montana, and I live in the booming mountain metropolis of Bozeman. “I’ve been hunting here for years, dude,” I griped. “I’ve never seen it like this.” “Ebbs and flows, brother. ...

Fuller Lakes Trail- Kenai National Wildlife Refuge

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Jacob Mannix
Fire killed trees near the Fuller Lakes Trail in spring of 2021. The Fuller Lakes Trail in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge is a gem on the Kenai Peninsula, but damage from fire and insects has left many trees alongside the trail dead. Wind and heavy snow has caused many of these trees to fall near or across the trail, making difficult hiking conditions.  The trail is inside the Mystery Creek Unit of the Kenai Wilderness Area, which restricts motorized use and can make trail repair and ...

BHA Continues Our Longstanding Support for Expansion of Public Access

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Tim Brass
Backcountry Hunters & Anglers has consistently supported the expansion of public hunting and fishing access on National Wildlife Refuge System lands and waters across the United States. Since passage of the 1997 National Wildlife Refuge Improvement Act, which resulted in hunting, fishing and other wildlife-dependent recreation being recognized as priority recreational uses on refuges, state fish and wildlife agencies and refuge managers have been working together, through an open public ...

Kiowa National Grasslands - A Hidden Gem

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Beau Murphy
It’s always shocking when you find some wonderful piece of public land that’s been sitting under your nose for years. Many New Mexican’s are likely to find themselves in this condition if they have not yet taken the time to appreciate our state’s eastern grasslands. In the northeast, in particular, a gently rolling landscape covered only in short grass prairie – and dotted with pronghorn and cattle – is interrupted by the Canadian River Canyon creating a dynamic and beautiful landscape. ...

26 NGO's Band Together for Bear Hunting in California

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: California BHA
A resounding coalition of NGO's has rallied around the following letter from the Bear Management Subcommittee of the Hunting and Conservation Coalition.  This thoroughly researched and well-articulated piece was primarily authored by California BHA's newest board member, Jonathan Fusaro, and it systematically and scientifically refutes the claims made by the HSUS in their recent petition to ban bear hunting in California.  Don't forget to show up to the upcoming Fish & Game Commission to ...

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: California BHA
The California Natural Resources Agency recently released the draft "Pathways to 30x30" document and has solicited public comment. (From the Pathways to 30 by 30 draft) "In October 2020, Governor Newsom issued the Nature-Based Solutions Executive Order N-82- 20, advancing biodiversity conservation as an administration priority and elevating the role of nature in the fight against climate change. BHA Podcast & Blast, Ep. 125: Mark Squillace, attorney, legal scholar, public access expert

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Arkansas BHA Chapter
The forces of privatization are very definitely on the march. From hunting access and opportunity to the age-old conflict over who has the right to fish or swim or boat on our waterways, privatization is arguably the defining debate in the United States right now. Join us for the story of an 80-year Colorado fly fisherman who is attempting to halt this slide toward privatizing stream and river access in his state, maybe once and for all.  Law professor, attorney and public lands and water ...
