EVENT RECAP: Logan Shooting Area Clean Up

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Chris McCarthy
The rain was coming down steadily during the drive from Belgrade to Logan on the morning of May 1, 2022. Not a downpour, but enough that it could make for a long day and possibly deter folks less hearty than those who joined the Montana Chapter of BHA in our Logan Area cleanup. Our efforts focused on DNRC state trust land, just west of the Logan Landfill, primarily a mile long section along Buffalo Jump Road and a single site along 2 Dog Road, heading towards the landfill. With the ...

BHA Podcast & Blast, Bonus Ep. 131, Sen. Jon Tester and the Blackfoot Clearwater Stewardship Act

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Thomas Plank
To those outside of Montana, the Blackfoot River is the “Big Blackfoot” featured in Norman Maclean’s lyrical and tragic novel A River Runs Through It. For Montanans and generations of visitors, the Blackfoot is a state of being all its own, a big rowdy river of native cutthroats and bull trout, its waters born of both high-altitude wilderness snows and the tannin-stained, unfathomably rich chain of wetlands and lakes of the Clearwater drainage. It is a huge, complex and vibrant watershed, ...

Cleanup planned for state land near Logan

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Montana BHA
State trust land by the Logan Landfill has become popular for recreational target shooting, but increasingly, users have left behind trash, spent shells and target waste. That’s why the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation and the Montana Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers are organizing a cleanup day at the Logan shooting area on Sunday. People who want to help pick up litter at the unofficial shooting area should meet at the DNRC state trust land near the ...

The Book of Yaak by Rick Bass

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Zachary Williams

This title is part of BHA's Jim Posewitz Digital Library: Required Reading for Conservationists   What do we lose when we let our favorite wild places succumb to the whims of industry and development? This is the question Rick Bass explores in The Book of Yaak. In the opening pages Bass sets out to capture the heart of the Yaak Valley, a wild, remote region in northwest Montana with immense biodiversity and a critical corridor for animals moving between the Northern Rockies and the Pacific ...

Staying Safe in Bear Country

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Josiah Deitz
Quietly hiking up a steep section of trail, a loud crack of a branch broke the silence. "That’s a big animal," I thought. A rush came over me like a rocky mountain freight train as I quickly realized what was happening. The largest predator in the woods was barreling straight towards me, growling as it announced its intentions. If you spend time in the Mountain West you know that grizzlies are a common thread of discussion. With their population well recovered in a small percentage of their ...

BHA Podcast & Blast, Ep. 130: BHA’s Armed Forces Initiative: Honoring and serving those who serve

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Thomas Plank
“Public lands are probably not the reason you would list for joining the Army or the Marines, but they’re the key piece of what makes America the greatest country out there,” says Trevor Hubbs, BHA’s Armed Forces Initiative coordinator. BHA recognizes that military members are a key constituency when it comes to the defense of our wild public lands and waters. The Armed Forces Initiative, or AFI, is booming – from Ft. Bragg to Camp Pendleton and everywhere in between, active duty military ...
