BLM Kicks Off Important Big Game Amendment Process in Colorado

In July the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced their intent to amend Resource Management Plans (RMPs) in Colorado to better maintain, conserve, and protect big game corridors and other big game habitat areas on BLM-managed lands, approximately 3.4 million acres. Black River WMA: Digging Into Public Waterfowl Hunting in Arkansas

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Arkansas BHA Chapter
Earlier this spring a concerned member contacted our board with a question about Dave Donaldson Black River Wildlife Management Area in Northeast Arkansas. With all the news and publicity concerning green tree reservoirs (GTRs) at Bayou Meto and Hurricane Lake WMAs, why hadn’t there been any news about Black River? (Side note: if you’re not familiar with this topic, check out Clay Newcomb’s Bear Grease podcast episodes 36-39, where he covers the habitat problem that is generations in the ...

Smoked Pike Burgers

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Adam Miller
The noble northern pike does not get the respect it deserves, but I will die on this hill, violently swinging a red and white spoon like a medieval flail as I face the charging hordes of  walleye purists, wielding whatever lure of the day they carry designed to catch more fishermen than fish. Whether that pike be fried, baked, broiled, skewered in kabobs, pickled and canned, poached as if lobster, or even the eggs salted for a poor man’s caviar, I will put it up against anything (and ...

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: New Jersey BHA
The Hudson Canyon sits roughly 100 miles offshore from New Jersey. Throughout history it has played an economic, environmental, commercial, and recreational role by providing pristine habitat for countless species, from sea turtles to sperm whales. FWP pheasant stocking program moving forward, despite opposition

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Montana BHA
Birds will soon hit the ground under a Fish, Wildlife and Parks program aimed at increasing the number of youth hunters by stocking pen-raised pheasants on state-owned land across Montana, including Beckman Wildlife Management Area near Denton.  The project has ruffled the feathers of some sportsmen’s groups, who call it a waste of wildlife funding dollars they say should be spent instead on improving pheasant habitat, while supporters say it is a valid way to encourage more youth to ...

PA BHA: Game Commission should oversee deer shooting operations

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Pennsylvania BHA
The Pennsylvania Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers joins the National Deer Association in calling for the regulatory oversight of the 723 captive deer shooting facilities to be transferred to the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC). The presence of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in the Pennsylvania’s deer herd is a threat to the future of hunting in Pennsylvania and the $1.6 billion in economic output generated by hunting that supports many jobs and businesses. CWD was first found in ...

LETTER: MT BHA Comments on MT FWP Proposed Habitat Conservation Lease Agreements

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Jake Schwaller
July 13, 2022   Montana Fish, Wildlife, & Parks c/o Ken McDonald P.O. Box 200701 Helena, MT 59620   RE: Habitat Conservation Lease Agreements EA   Dear Mr. McDonald,   I’m submitting this letter on behalf of the Montana Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (MT BHA) and our nearly 3,000 dues-paying in-state members. While we broadly support efforts to provide vital habitat for wildlife in this state, we believe this new lease program proposal is misguided and wholly unnecessary. This ...

Support the Role of Hunters in Conservation Funding: Stop the RETURN Act

For 85 years, hunters have played a central role in wildlife conservation funding through the Pittman-Robertson Act.  During this time we have seen enormous success in restoring species including waterfowl, turkey, white-tailed deer and elk. Hunters, who willingly step up to conserve wildlife, remain proud of our contribution to conservation through the excise taxes on firearms, ammunition and archery equipment, to the tune of $1.1 billion in 2021.  The RETURN Act (H.R. 8167), legislation ...
