Redefining Mentorship

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Dominic Corsini

On a cool evening, I sat hidden amidst a group of boulders, watching the north face of a 11,000-foot summit as over 100 elk made their way out of the timber and onto open grasses along the adjoining alpine basin. It was a sight I hope to remember for the rest of my days. And yet, as impressive as it was, this spectacle had a downside. That being … it was July … not September: no rut crazed bugling elk, no aspens draped in the colors or autumn, and no crisp morning air.  There wouldn’t be a ...

House passes Inflation Reduction Act following Senate

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Kaden McArthur
Today the House of Representatives passed the Inflation Reduction Act, a massive spending bill that targets climate change, health care and taxes, among other issues. The House vote follows an Aug. 7 vote by the Senate to advance the legislation. The bill’s passage comes after nearly a year of congressional debate and negotiations surrounding the budget reconciliation process. An agreement was finally brokered between Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Senate leadership to move the bill before ...

Idaho BHA chapter cleans up the Salmon River near Challis

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Ace Hess
Staff and volunteers with the Idaho chapter floated the Salmon River last Saturday between Watts Bridge and Cottonwood Recreation Site. After high water recedes and the weekend splash 'n giggle crowds have passed through, there is usually some garbage to clean up along the banks of this world-famous river. We also use this opportunity to pull and bag spotted knapweed on gravel bars and islands along the way. Pulling and bagging prevents millions of viable seeds (viable up to 7 years) from ...

OPINION: Daines playing DC politics

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Scott Mylnechuk
My mother, a fourth-generation Montanan, regularly preached “leave it better than you found it.” Now that I’m a father who hunts and fishes on public lands and waters with my family, the reason behind this message resonates: I want to ensure that the opportunities I had are also afforded to my son, Walter. The cold, clean water flowing out of the Scapegoat, Bob Marshall and Mission Mountain Wildernesses into the Blackfoot River provides life to a diverse ecosystem. It’s also where many of ...

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: New England BHA Chapter

Mule Deer in Deschutes County

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Chris Hager
By Suzanne Linford Deschutes county is a historical migratory corridor for Mule deer in central Oregon. They migrate in summer to the higher elevations of the eastern Cascades, and they migrate in fall to lower elevations in winter range across Highway 97. Winter range is essential for their survival because it provides them with seasonally specific forage (native plants), protection from the harsher weather found at higher elevations and exposure to greater genetic diversity found in the ...

Mule Deer Take a Back Seat in Deschutes County

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Ian Isaacson
As an avid hunter and conservationist living in Deschutes County for the last 10 years, I have seen firsthand the eye-popping decline in our mule deer herds. ODFW population estimates for the Upper Deschutes and Paulina Wildlife Management Units, which comprise the vast majority of the county, are at a dismal 40% and 24.8% of population objectives respectively. In August 2021, Deschutes County staff provided the Board of Commissioners with a roadmap of potential options in regards to the ...

Montana Is on the Brink of Destroying One of Its Most Successful Conservation Programs

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Montana BHA
STEEN ANDREASEN is running out of options to keep his central Montana ranch in his family. The 54-year-old is raising his own two sons along with his two nephews on the 23,000-acre family place located along the Marias River between Great Falls and Havre. Andreasen’s grandfather homesteaded the original part of the ranch in 1915. It’s been a tough century for the Andreasen family. Extreme weather, untimely deaths, and generational debt have put Steen deep in a hole. His last hope for saving ...
