caribou testimony WA chapter

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Chris Hager
Public Testimony at the 10/28/22 WDFW Commission Meeting: Good Morning Commissioners, My name is Dan Wilson and I’m the co-chair of the Washington Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers. On behalf of our chapter, I would like to strongly voice our support that the Woodland caribou remain listed as state endangered species in Washington. I also feel compelled to state that it is simply insufficient to list them as an endangered species and allow a periodic review to act as a eulogy to this ...

OPINION: It's up to us to defend our hunting traditions

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: John Sullivan
Hunting season is here. Many hunters— including me — will head out this weekend in search of good times and a chance at harvesting Montana’s publicly owned game. While afield I’m often reminded of how lucky I am to hunt and to participate in the North American Model of Wildlife Management. This fuels my desire to preserve our traditions and opportunities and push back against efforts to privatize and commercialize our wildlife. Time afield also provides an opportunity for introspection. ...

University of Wisconsin Stevens Point Hosts Fly Tying Night

Author: Anonym
The beauty of the outdoors is so alluring that it drives us to attempt to blend in with our scenic surroundings. We accomplish this through clothing that blends in with the environment, calls that produce sounds like the game we pursue, and even mimicking life itself through decoys and lures. Those in this community strive to mirror and better understand what surrounds us in the outdoors. Take a moment now and imagine yourself standing in a flowing stream. In your hand you hold a fly rod, ...

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Montana BHA
A recent vote by the Montana Department of Natural Resources & Conservation Land Board will set aside 5,700 acres of state-managed public land in the Big Sky State. Utah's Elk Management Plan Moves Ahead

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Perry Hall
Early in the year, the Utah Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers was approached by Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) Big Game Coordinator, now Wildlife Section Chief Covy Jones to have a seat on the Elk Management Plan Committee to re-write the long-term strategic plan for elk management in the state. As a chapter, we’ve been working hard to increase engagement with the Division on critical issues such as this, and immediately accepted the seat at the table. We knew we had our work ...

Colorado BHA Q4 2022 Update

Author: David Lien
Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) was born around a campfire in March 2004, thanks to seven hunters and anglers, men and women, taking the initiative.[1] That’s how all battles are begun and won! In fact, BHA was founded by former U.S. Army officer, Mike Beagle. The “Gang of Seven” that gathered around our founding campfire also included a U.S. Navy veteran, Tony Heckard.[2] The first state chapter, here in Colorado, was founded (in 2005) by a former U.S. Marine Corps helicopter pilot, ...

Kansas BHA Urges a "NO" Vote on HCR 5014

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Kansas BHA
On Election Day ballots will include Constitutional Amendment HCR-5014.  Voting “Yes” for this amendment to our State Constitution would give the Kansas Legislature direct authority over the management of fish and wildlife to the Legislature as opposed to KDWP professionals trained in the fish and wildlife management.  Supporters of the bill will argue this amendment creates a checks and balances to limit bureaucracy, however, KDWP’s internal checks and balances is the Wildlife Commission. ...

Passage of SB431 Pink Envelope Bill a Win for PA Hunters!

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Pennsylvania BHA
The Pennsylvania Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers applauds the passage today of SB431. Now approved by the full legislature, the bill goes to Governor Tom Wolf, who has said he will sign it into law. This legislation will bring our antlerless license system into the modern age by allowing doe tags to be purchased online and at licensing agents and not exclusively via a confusing mail in system using the dreaded pink envelopes.   At least 500 BHA members and supporters have used ...

MT Land Board Acquires Large Property for Public Use

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Montana BHA
The Montana Land Board has approved acquiring a new piece of land to become a Wildlife Management Area. In a four-to-one vote, the board acquired more than 5,000 acres, at the base of the Big Snowy Mountains.Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks has cited the lack of public access to the mountains as a primary factor for an elk population which is 900% over objective.Initially, the land belonged to Forrest Allen of Cody, Wyoming, and it was donated after his death in 2019 to a children's ...
