2022 Policy Roundup

Our chapters are constantly working on protecting our public lands, waters, and wildlife. In 2022, they did more than ever before to make sure the North American Model of Conservation remained intact. From corner crossing in Wyoming to desert bighorn stewardship projects in California to bear hunting advocacy in New Jersey, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers chapters were instrumental in battling for the things we as hunters and anglers hold most dear. FEDERAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS: The Inflation ...

OPINION: Reject East Crazy Mountains land swap proposal

Just like Holland Lake, the U.S. Forest Service is at it again — trying to pull a fast one on the public by putting forward a significant proposal that would negatively impact our public lands, public access and public opportunities. All the while private interests would get exactly what they want. The USFS recently put forth the proposed “East Crazy Inspiration Divide Land Exchange.” The proposal is complex and convoluted, intertwining what should be a simple land exchange in the ...

Drastic Changes to Quality Elk Hunting in District 313 Proposed

Author: Montana BHA
For an outfit that has repeatedly stated their desire to simplify and improve public engagement, a proposed last-minute change in FWP’s hunting regs seems mighty rushed. Long after the biennial season-setting last spring and squashed between two holidays, Montana's Fish & Wildlife Commission’s Vice Chair Tabor is pushing a drastic change to elk hunting in southwestern Montana. Sounds complicated, doesn't it? It is. The change would eliminate a unique, limited-entry 2-week hunting opportunity ...

Colorado Over-The-Counter (OTC) Unit Elk Hunting: Problems & Possibilities

Author: David Lien
Although I revere all big game (and other) species, only Rocky Mountain elk can coax me out in the late fall freezing rain or swirling snow to hike and climb for miles in long-odds, over-the-counter (OTC) units where the chances of encountering other hunters generally eclipses those of seeing elk.[1] Colorado’s OTC units are perhaps the most difficult elk hunts in the country, but the challenge only strengthens my resolve. “Elk hunting is hard. Period. It doesn’t matter if you come West ...

2022 West Virginia Chapter Highlights

2022 was a good year for the West Virginia BHA Chapter. Policy and legislative issues were the primary focus rolling into the year and the chapter did an excellent job keeping members privy to possible bills that could impact hunting, fishing, and public lands. Many of these legislative proposals aim to turn our public hunting lands into recreational OHV areas.  While we are not opposed to the state and private motorized recreation groups procuring new public lands or access agreements ...
