Author: David Lien
For those who have never hunted Rocky Mountain elk (C. e. nelson, also known as the Yellowstone elk) and are contemplating a public lands elk hunt, it can seem like an incredibly daunting, even overwhelming proposition (true) with a steep learning curve (also true). There’s no way to sugarcoat it and there are no shortcuts. Public lands elk hunting is a tough game, physically and mentally, but don’t just take my word for it. Many hunters follow Randy Newberg—of “Fresh Tracks” and “On Your ...

The 10th Mountain Division & HR 803 (Protecting America’s Wilderness and Public Lands Act)

Author: David Lien
During a recent visit to the National Museum of the United States Army (at Fort Belvoir, VA), I learned that by the end of World War II (in 1945) the U.S. had 89 Army Divisions deployed overseas, including 68 in Europe: 47 Infantry, 16 Armored, 4 Airborne and 1 Mountain—the 10th Mountain Division.[1] Many Coloradoans know that the 10th Mountain Division was activated at Camp Hale Colorado (on July 10, 1943).[2] From November 1942 through June 1944, Camp Hale housed some 15,000 troops (along ...

Colorado Elk Hunting: Right Place, Right Time

Author: David Lien
The vast majority of the well over 200,000 hunters who purchase elk tags in Colorado each year don’t leave the mountains with a quartered or boned-out elk en route to the freezer, myself included. In fact, my elk hunting success (albeit limited) over the years can primarily be attributed to being in the right place at the right time, or “orchestrated luck.” I’m a firm believer that we set ourselves up to be lucky, in all facets of life, through hard work and persistence no matter the ...

Conservation (& Conciliation)

Author: David Lien
Backcountry Hunters & Anglers was (and is) inspired by the political activism of Theodore Roosevelt, the Land Ethic of Aldo Leopold, the hunting ethics of David Petersen and the fiery oratory of Hal Herring. And from the start we have been focused on public lands and waters conservation (and conciliation). To this day we’re following closely in the footsteps of our nation’s greatest hunter-conservationist (and Medal of Honor recipient), Teddy Roosevelt.[1] In 1903 President Roosevelt and ...

Author: David Lien
The Colorado chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) recently appointed Graham Geary to serve as an Assistant Regional Director for the Northern Colorado region. Graham was born in Greeley, Colorado, and raised on a small ranch east of there on the edge of the Great Plains, a location from which you can see the snowy peaks to the west and to the east the vast grasslands of the nation’s interior spread as far as the eye can see. “We raised a few cows and rode some good horses and lived ...

Author: David Lien
“… as early as 1871, nearly a century before Earth Day, hunters and anglers were speaking out for nature and the environment … The natural world sustains us with clean air, unpolluted water, recreation, and natural resources. If we destroy nature, we destroy ourselves.” –Jim Posewitz, Beyond Fair Chase[1]   Renowned trad bow elk hunter David Petersen (a former U.S. Marine Corps helicopter pilot) founded the Colorado Backcountry Hunters & Anglers chapter—the first BHA state chapter—in 2005, ...
