OPINION: Are Montanans really satisfied with elk management?

Sharing the results of their Resident Elk Hunter Survey, FWP’s press release and summary tout that 73% of respondents "are satisfied with elk management." Given the contention around elk management, this surprised us. So, we looked closer. FWP employs the commonly accepted 5-point numerical Likert scale to gauge hunter satisfaction, which provides the following five choices: 1 and 2 to measure dissatisfaction, a neutral option (3, signaling neither satisfied nor dissatisfied), and 4 and 5 to ...

Colorado Over-The-Counter (OTC) Unit Elk Hunting: Hope Is Not A Strategy

Author: David Lien
During my sixteen years or so of over-the-counter (OTC) unit elk hunting in southwest Colorado’s San Juan Mountains a few telltale observations come to mind: 1.) Be prepared to see more hunters than elk; 2.) Be prepared to see no elk; 3.) Be physically and mentally prepared to hike higher and farther than most other hunters, and still see no elk.[1] Such are the long odds in Colorado’s generally over-hunted OTC units. “It’s a zoo. You show up at the trailhead and you’re gonna count every ...

PA Chapter dips a toe into restoring habitat in deep forest streams

By Samanatha Lutz Pennsylvania BHA Board Member The land that we know as Allegheny National Forest (ANF) in western Pennsylvania today is vastly different than the old growth forest that once covered the Allegheny Plateau. The forest was once characterized by large trees, of various ages, creating a multi-layered forest canopy that provided a rich biodiverse forest floor and essential contributions to our streams. As trees aged and or during natural disaster events, trees would fall near and ...

EVENT RECAP: Montana BHA Helps Bureau of Land Management Inventory Beaver Dams

Author: Montana BHA
At the end of August, 13 volunteers joined the Bureau of Land Management and The Nature Conservancy to inventory beaver dams in Upper Gold Creek.      Missoula BLM is currently undergoing a significant land acquisition project in the Lower Blackfoot area. Sportsmen: Elk Hunter Survey Doesn't Support FWP Claims

A sportsmen’s group is questioning Fish, Wildlife & Parks’ interpretation of its recent elk hunting poll, particularly claims that most resident hunters are satisfied with current elk management. Last week, Montana Backcountry Hunters and Anglers posted its analysis of FWP’s elk management survey and found flaws in a number of FWP’s conclusions, including that “73% of the respondents from this survey are satisfied with elk management in Montana.” “Politics are politics. When the Legislature ...

Illinois BHA and US Army Corps Create New 3D Archery Park

The Illinois Chapter of BHA partnered with the US Army Corps of Engineers over the past year to development of a public 3-D archery trail at Lake Shelbyville in Central Illinois. Lake Shelbyville is roughly 24,000 acres of public land and water that offers a major hunting and fishing opportunity in central Illinois. Although archery is the #1 means of hunting this land and in a region where whitetail hunting is king, there is not a facility where hunters can practice in the immediate ...
