The day before Maine's turkey season opens is a great time to give back to Public Land. In collaboration with Maine Bureau of Public Land and Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife this project will involve the removal of wire fencing and invasive plants. This fencing has been identified as a habitat improvement opportunity by IFW Wildlife biologist assigned to Bureau Public Lands. This 230 acre parcel on the banks of the Kennebec River offers river access and diverse habitat for game and non-game species close the center of Skowhegan. Volunteers will be using handsaws, loppers & pruners to cut away thorny plants (hawthorn & multiflora rose) and bolt cutters/heavy duty wire cutters to cut fence into manageable pieces for disposal. Volunteers that are not ready for the rigor of cutting away invasives and fencing can still help by picking up the roadside and other trash. Be sure to RSVP for this event as we will let you know of any changes in the schedule due to inclement weather.
After the field work we will be heading over to Bigelow Brewing. Meet us in the tasting room for wood fired pizza and beer made with Maine ingredients following the work event.
