Fall in Central Washington offers some pretty enticing opportunities for hunters, anglers, and adventurers. If you happen to be out in the hills in early October, WA BHA would like to encourage you to come by the Whiskey Dick Wildlife Area outside of Ellensburg to join WDFW land managers and fellow hunter-conservationist for some more boots on the ground conservation!
The greater LT Murray Wildlife Area complex in beautiful Central Washington provides 118,300 acres of wildlife habitat and outdoor recreation opportunity. The Whiskey Dick Unit, a unit within the LT Murray, is a rugged and primordial landscape that offers critical wintering grounds for the Colockum elk herd. We intend to rejoin our friends and land managers at WDFW in their efforts to remove legacy barbed wire fencing, which currently is reducing the permeability of this otherwise excellent habitat for elk, deer, and bighorn sheep. Good habitat is only good if wildlife can move though it. So let’s get out there and leave it better than we found it!
Come prepared to have fun and get some work done with like minded hunter-conservationists. Come work alongside your public land and wildlife managers. Get some scouting in while we’re out there and come see what the LT Murray has to offer!
We'll get going at 8am and work until we feel like quittin'. Campout afterwards and join us the next day for an informal conversation on wilderness first aid.
WDFW will bring a couple pair of fencing pliers, tools for removing nails, as well as several jugs of water. Remember, rattlesnakes are common in this area so wear appropriate footwear and watch where you place your hands when working with wire. Bring plenty of water and snacks. Bring leather work gloves, working shoes or boots, and sunscreen. Fence pliers or wire cutters will be very useful if you have them.
