Join us on Wednesday March 27th from 7 - 8:30pm for an in-depth educational discussion with Kentucky Elk Program Coordinator John Hast. John has been a driving force behind the elk restoration in Kentucky and will provide attendees with broad knowledge and understanding of the Kentucky Elk Program. Folks will learn about the history of the elk restoration program followed by hunting opportunities, the application process, and an outlook on the future of Kentucky elk hunting.
Elk are native to Kentucky and were present until the mid-1880’s, when the population was eliminated due to habitat degradation and overhunting. This is why the Kentucky elk program is considered a restoration, not an introduction. Kentucky’s present elk herd is a free ranging, wild herd established from 1,550 wild elk captured out-of-state and released into southeast Kentucky between December 1997 and March 2002.
Every year thousands of people apply for a coveted Kentucky Elk Tag and a very lucky few are drawn. Many of those lucky people are then left to quickly understand next steps, available public lands, private lands, available outfitters, costs, and many other concepts that need to be understood in order to improve their odds of success! This event will help address that information so that if you, a friend, or family member is lucky in 2024, you'll have an idea of how to proceed!
The 2024 Kentucky Elk Application period ends April 30th, so here's your chance to understand the experience when you're drawn!
You must RSVP to receive the Zoom link, so please RSVP now and be sure to refer folks that may be interested.
