Moorhen & Rail season opens September 1st and sportsmen and women are encouraged to get out on their public water and take advantage of this unique hunting opportunity. The common gallinule or ‘moorhen’ lives around well-vegetated marshes, ponds, canals, and other wetlands is about the size of a small chicken and can be relatively easily taken by shotgun. Don’t be fooled, the birds are hearty, so 4 shot is recommended.
Their habitat makes often allows for a morning of shooting and fishing providing for a great day on the water. Hunters who choose to participate are encouraged to ethically harvest birds between September 1-5 reserving the breasts and legs.
Bring your harvest to the Hasley Family Home located at 109 Creekwood Court, Longwood, FL 32779 at 4:00 PM. We’ll fry the breasts and fish while renowned salumist and R3 Chairman, Adam Steele prepares sausage from the legs.
The Hasley family will provide okra, hushpuppies and beverages. Attendees are encouraged to wear turkey masks and practice appropriate hygiene. Please RSVP in advance so supplies can be purchased and appropriate seating can be arranged.
Admission is free, but donations to BHA in support of public land advocacy will be gladly accepted!
