Land Access - Week 1 (July 17 -July 23)

Public lands are the cornerstone of our North American hunting and fishing traditions, yet they are only valuable for outdoor recreation if they are accessible. This week we are highlighting land access issues, like corner crossing, which collectively hold the key to maintaining current access and unlocking millions of new acres of YOUR public lands to be enjoyed for generations to come.

This week we invite you to share a social post highlighting a land access issue that matters to you. Tag your posts with @backcountryhunters and your local chapter’s handle and use #HikeToHunt. In addition to increasing awareness for your issue we hope you will join us in fundraising during this year’s Hike to Hunt Challenge to ensure we can keep fighting for appropriate land access at every level.

Stewardship - Week 2 (July 24 - July 30)

How far would you go for clean water, healthy habitats and abundant fish and game populationsThis week we are highlighting BHA’s stewardship work throughout North America to raise awareness for the many issues impacting our fish and wildlife species and the tremendous impact that dedicated conservationists can have when we leverage the power of BHA’s volunteer community for the greater good.

Join us by breaking in your hiking boots and raising some money to support fence pulls, fish passage projects, wildlife crossings, winter range restoration and much more. We also invite you to share a social post highlighting stewardship work being done by BHA to improve habitat for fish and wildlife or a stewardship project that needs our attention.

Week 3 - Nature Rx (July 31 - August 6)

There’s just something about being outside that helps this military community get better.”  Week three of Hike to Hunt is all about the healing powers of nature through hunting, fishing, foraging – or just getting outside. Whether its marching 10 miles into the backcountry, floating your favorite waterway or mushroom hunting with family and friends, the outdoors can have a profound impact on your mental and physical health. We are here to celebrate that fact with our favorite recipes here to fill up your cup.

Join the Hike to Hunt Challenge this week and toast to the things that help you make the most of life. Hike, run or paddle to raise funds to support BHA’s mission to keep the outdoors accessible to all regardless of background or personal wealth. We also invite you to share a social post highlighting how the outdoors improves your mental health and why access to outdoor spaces is important for all.

Week 4 - Trailhead Diplomacy (August 7 - August 13)

Hunters don’t care about wildlife and just enjoy drinking beer and killing for sport” - We have all heard the many mischaracterizations and polarizing perceptions about hunters from friends, family or social platforms. Here is your chance to flip the script with a little trailhead diplomacy. Head to your favorite public trailhead, roll out the welcome mat and carry out some random acts of kindness for your fellow public lands owners as we work to recreate the narrative around who hunters are and why we choose to eat what we kill.

Join the Hike to Hunt Challenge this week and while you’re out fundraising and putting in miles carry out a random act of kindness on your public lands or waters. Hand out BHA literature, try some vension diplomacy or just pick up some trash, it’s entirely up to you. Be sure to share a Facebook and/or Instagram post sharing your act of kindness and your Hike to Hunt fundraising page!

Week 5 - Water Access (August 14 - August 20)

“By the law of nature these things are common to all mankind: the air, running water, the sea, and consequently the shores of the sea” - Roman law text from the 6th century first laid the framework for the U.S. and Canadian Public Trust Doctrines which also have roots in the Magna Carta, and English Common Law. However, the public rights to hunt, fish, float or recreate upon the navigable waters of the U.S. have been challenged in recent times by wealthy landowners seeking to rewrite those rules, and this week we show how BHA chapters from coast to coast are at the forefront of defending this foundational right.

Hike, run or paddle to raise funds for BHA’s mission to defend public water access then share a Facebook and/or Instagram post highlighting why public water access is important to you.

Week 6 - Wildlife Week (August 21 - August 27)

Conservation works, but it requires fundraising and manpower to support the many species of special concern that require an extra lift to combat the challenges presented by urbanization, climate change and invasive species. Join us for this final week of our Hike to Hunt Challenge as we shed light on what matters most, our fish and wildlife species who depend upon the North American Model of Conservation and critically important legislation like the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act.

This week we invite you to share a Facebook and/or Instagram post highlighting a wildlife issue that’s important to you. Tag your posts with @backcountryhunters and your local chapter’s handle and use #HikeToHunt. In addition to increasing awareness for your issue, we hope you’ll join us in fundraising during this year’s Hike to Hunt Challenge to ensure we can keep fighting for science-based wildlife management, and fueling grassroots engagement to create a brighter future for the wildlife we live to pursue.
