Join the Wisconsin Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers and the Driftless Area Land Conservancy (DALC) for a unique stewardship project at the newly acquired Big Rock property on Saturday, October 11, from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM.

This Build-a-Creek Crossing Volunteer Work Day will focus on constructing a crossing that will enable future conservation projects planned for the site. The property—named for its dramatic rock outcroppings and the Big Rock Creek valley that runs through it—was recently acquired by DALC with support from the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program, Wisconsin’s flagship conservation funding initiative.

The site is rich in natural beauty and ecological value, including a bald eagle nest perched high in a massive eastern white pine that towers above the work area. Volunteers will hike approximately 2 miles round-trip to reach the project site, navigating steep, rocky, wet, and grassy terrain along the way.

Who We’re Looking For:

All volunteers capable of the hike are welcome. Those with basic carpentry skills are especially encouraged to participate, as these skills will be invaluable in constructing the creek crossing. This won’t be light duty—it’s an opportunity to roll up your sleeves and take part in meaningful, hands-on conservation work at a truly remarkable property.

Please Bring:

  • Work clothes that can get muddy
  • Long pants and long-sleeved shirt
  • Sun protection
  • Bug protection
  • Sturdy footwear suitable for rocky/wet terrain
  • Reusable water bottl

Optional Bonus:

Big Rock Creek is a Class II trout stream—so bring along your trout rod if you’d like to enjoy some fishing as the inland trout season winds down after the workday

Parking & Meeting Logistics:

Details for parking and the exact meeting point will be provided to all participants upon RSVP

RSVP & Questions:
