Why You Should Want to Attend:
The Armed Forces Initiative is the BHA program focused on creating conservationists within the military community. Colorado AFI will be removing several miles of old barbed wire fence from elk and mule deer winter concentration areas and migration corridors.
What is it:
J
oin us for a day of pulling old fences. Through the project, volunteers will improve habitat and connectivity for big game herds in the Mosquito Range and South Park Basin. This Bureau of Land Management project is in coordination with similar projects in the area being conducted by the United States Forest Service.
Please be advised that BHA AFI field events are alcohol free during the event hours. This worksite is located on BLM managed land. Dispersed camping is allowed and there is room for tents and trailers at the objective location if you would like to spend the night before or after the workday. If you elect to camp observe open fire restrictions if any are in place.
What to bring:
- leather gloves
-safety glasses or sunglasses
-water
-snacks
-boots
-clothes suitable for the forecasted weather
-sunscreen
-backpack
We will have tools (but feel free to bring your own such as fence pliers, bolt cutters, or post pullers) and spare gloves for those who need them. Colorado AFI will provide additional water on site and some snacks to help power you through the day. If you have additional dietary needs, please bring what you need to sustain you.

October 4th from 9AM-5PM
Where is it:
South Park Basin
Meet at the parking area at the NW corner of Hwy 285 and County Rd 5 (39.15340, -105.99976) west of Fairplay before 0900. Convoy leaves the parking lot at 0900 sharp. Directions from Fairplay are head 4.7 miles south on Hwy 285 from the traffic light, then turn right (west) onto CR 5.
Who can attend:
- This event is open to all members of the military community
(Active duty, Reserves, National Guard, Veterans, and Gold Star families)
- You do not need to be a BHA member to attend
(but we sure would appreciate it if you were)
- All BHA members
This will be a great opportunity for AFI and BHA members to gather and learn from one another while working together to improve our public lands.
