The Utah BHA Chapter has partnered with the Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) at Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area (FBWMA) to put this event together. The FBWMA is the gateway to the surrounding wetlands of Great Salt Lake and is one of the busiest WMA’s in the state with tens of thousands of members of the public recreating on the land each year. The FBWMA is about 18,000 acres that requires intense management, from moving water to managing invasive species and much more. This project will involve mitigating an invasive plant species called “Phragmites”. Once the Phragmites have been removed, peach willows and coyote willows will be planted. In addition to the Phragmites mitigation, the event will involve cleaning up any debris/trash that is in Farmington Creek. Farmington Creek is an important component to the WMA habitat since it replenishes Teal Lake, an important unit for waterfowl production. The creek also runs along the Eccles Wildlife Education Center’s public trails, which is used by thousands of people each year and is an important area for wildlife, including nesting owls and ducks.
This event is for physically fit outdoor enthusiasts and conservation advocates that can handle very labor-intensive cleanup work (this is not a kid and/or dog friendly event). Individuals that RSVP will need to bring waders, wading boots, gloves, a long sleeve shirt, sunscreen, bug spray, and sunglasses (all other necessary tools and equipment will be provided). This event is eligible for dedicated hunter hours.
Don’t miss out on this event, this is a great opportunity to give back to the wetlands and all the amazing species that inhabit the Great Salt Lake!
