event_description: Paddle with a purpose — help us remove the invasive water chestnut from our waterways!Water chestnut is a harmful aquatic, invasive species, which is known to take over stretches of water. When left unchecked, water chestnut has the potential to decimate ecosystems and eliminate recreational opportunities. Fortunately, it is easily identifiable and smaller infestations can be managed with trained volunteers hand-pulling the plant. The key to keeping water chestnut from invading new areas is to remove plants before they have a chance to set seeds.Come join Connecticut AFI in supporting The Jonah Center and the Connecticut River Conservancy (CRC) by paddling to help save the Connecticut River in Glastonbury from invasive water chestnut. This is a fun, satisfying activity — combining paddling, teamwork, enjoying beautiful scenery and wildlife. We will launch from and return to the boat launch on Point Rd in Glastonbury.Volunteers should bring their own canoe or kayak with paddles and a PFD for each paddler! If you do not have a canoe or kayak and would like to borrow one, please let us know by emailing Rafael Vargas (ctafibackcountryhunters.org). We will have at least 7 Oru Inlet foldable kayaks, paddles and PFDs to borrow. Please note that the max paddler height for these kayaks is 62" and the max paddler weight is 200 lbs.Volunteers should bring:•Hat•Sunscreen•Sunglasses•Water•An extra layer for chilly weather•Clothes that can get wet and dirty (and a change of clothes in the car just in case)•Closed-toed shoes or water shoes (no crocs or flip-flops but secured sandals are ok)•A boat and paddles (unless you specified otherwise during registration)•PFD (there are some available on site if you don’t have one)•Optional: work gloves (example, gardening gloves)A lunch consisting of burgers, hot dogs, chips and sodas will be provided by Connecticut AFI after we are done pulling water chestnuts. Join us in Glastonbury, CT, on August 5th from 9AM to 1PM!
