We will be removing a few miles of old barbed wire fence from elk and mule deer winter concentration areas and migration corridors. Through the project, volunteers will improve habitat and connectivity for big game herds in the Mosquito Range and South Park Basin. This Bureau of Land Management project is in coordination with similar projects in the area being conducted by the United States Forest Service.
The event will run from 0900 through completion or 1700, whichever happens first. Meet at Prather's market parking lot in Fairplay before 0900. Convoy leaves Prather's at 0900 sharp. Directions from Fairplay are head 4.7 miles south on Hwy 285 from the traffic light, then turn right (west) onto CR 5. Drive 5 miles to the pull-off on the right (north) side of road immediately before the turn onto Forest Road 458. If arriving late, look for volunteers on the BLM land to the north of the pull-off, vicinity lat/long 39.107520, -106.059950.
What to bring: Leather gloves (if you have them) and safety glasses are required (sunglasses are fine). We will have tools (but feel free to bring your own such as fence pliers, bolt cutters, or post pullers) and spare gloves for those who need them. Please bring a canteen or water bottle and some water, sunscreen, a backpack, and proper durable clothing you're not worried about tearing (jeans/Carhartt’s, boots, long-sleeve durable shirt).
Colorado AFI will provide additional water on site and some snacks to help power you through the day. If you have additional dietary needs, please bring what you need to sustain you.
Please be advised that AFI field events are alcohol free during the event hours. This worksite is located on BLM managed land. Dispersed camping is allowed and there is room for tents and trailers at the objective location if you would like to spend the night before or after the workday. If you elect to camp observe open fire restrictions if any are in place.
