Join Montana BHA and the Bureau of Land Management staff for a morning of beaver dam inventory in Upper Gold Creek from 8am-1pm on Saturday, August 26th. A carpool from Missoula will be available and lunch will be provided to volunteers courtesy of Cambie Taphouse + Coffee. Gold Creek offers plenty of camping and hiking opportunities if you wish to camp nearby and make a weekend of it!
Volunteers should plan to pack waders (if you have them), water, snacks, sunscreen, and bug spray. Make sure to check the weather and dress accordingly and wear sturdy, close-toed shoes. The field work will involve wading in streams or wet-wading in quick dry clothing (is there anything better on a hot August day?!), crawling on beaver dams, and some ~1-mile long off-trail bushwhacking. Volunteers will also need a working smartphone to fill out the inventory form. Please RSVP if you will be attending--RSVPs will receive information on how to download and operate the app prior to the work day.
Missoula BLM is currently undergoing a significant land acquisition project in the Lower Blackfoot area. The land was industrial timber lands for about 100 years when The Nature Conservancy took over ownership. Thanks to successful applications for Land & Water Conservation Fund projects, the land is now being acquired by the BLM. BLM staff are currently undergoing inventory and assessment of these newly acquired lands. Starting in 2024, the BLM will begin restoration efforts based on treatment recommendations that come out of current inventory and assessment efforts.
Lunch generously provided to volunteers by Cambie Taphouse + Coffee. Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions.
