He and his wife Ashley created the non-profit as a way of “bringing the unlikely to the outdoors”. Growing up in Atlanta he was fortunate to have access to nature just outside his grandfather’s back door. While hunting wasn’t part of his upbringing this small connection to the outdoors sparked big ideas beyond the urban setting. As a young adult, Durrell developed a passion for a life built around upland bird hunting. Today he shares his experience and knowledge with others through a blog and podcast called The Sporting Life Notebook. Come to hear Durrell’s story about entering the hunting world several years ago and never looking back. He’ll share insights on navigating a new community where most other participants look very different from you.Keng YangKeng grew up in the Twin Cities Hmong community. While his father and several family members are avid hunters, Keng never appreciated the idea of killing animals during his youth. He has even described himself as being an anti-hunter during his formative years. All that changed when Kaiya entered his life as a young adult. Kaiya is a German Wire-haired pointer that he received from his father. As Keng learned more about the desire (and need) for this breed of dog to hunt, he began exploring the idea of learning to hunt himself. Come and hear Keng’s story of how he went from being someone firmly against hunting to now looking for any opportunity to hit the fields in the fall with Kaiya.Cecka ParksCecka is the founder of the Minneapolis Meat Collective. She created the Minneapolis Meat Collective (MMC) out of a desire to build upon the community of butchers, chefs, home cooks, and meat artisans in Minneapolis and the surrounding area. As a resident of Minneapolis, Cecka has worked in the local food scene for over a decade. Cecka went on her first deer hunt last fall in central Minnesota and this spring she traveled to Idaho for her first turkey hunt.Lachelle CunninghamChef Lachelle has been a dynamic force on the Twin Cities’ food scene and is known for cooking globally-inspired comfort food that thwarts unhealthy stereotypes and fuses in global flavors. Lachelle’s first adventure in the wilderness happened in 2015 when she was part of the film Fish Out Of Water. In the film, she travels to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness with two other chefs to catch and cook fish and raise awareness of the threats posed by sulfide-ore copper mining near these pristine waters. Lachelle’s hunting journey began this last spring with her first turkey hunt in Idaho. At this event, Lachelle will share her fresh perspectives on getting into the outdoors and the connections you can make with clean and healthy protein from hunting and fishing.BHA is a grassroots, non-profit conservation organization with chapters across North America.
