New Mexico BHA is supporting the Santa Fe Chapter of Ducks Unlimited for their Second Annual Peña Blanca cleanup on Saturday, March 13th! We will be picking up trash and debris along the Rio Grande along with members of the the NM Paddlers Coalition, Adobe Whitewater Club, NM River Guides Group, and American Canoe Association. All are welcome to join us for the cleanup including friends, family, children and pets. Staging will occur in the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District parking lot at Peña Blanca at 10AM. Directions to the site are below.
Trash bags, snacks and drinks will be provided. However, please bring your own water and extra snacks in case there is a shortage. Work clothes that can get dirty should be worn and it's advisable to wear a sturdy pair of work gloves. Water boots will keep your feet dry along the river bank but are not a must and for anyone that would like to cross to the island in the middle of the conservancy, you're welcome to bring your waders.
There will be some sweet Ducks Unlimited merchandise to be raffled off. You won't want to miss it! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you there!
Covid-19 Compliance: Sandoval County is currently at the Yellow Level, according to the State's "Red to Green" framework. As such mass gatherings are limited to 10 persons. This events consists of small groups of under 10 persons performing cleanup along the Rio Grande in a socially distanced fashion. Masks are required at check-in.
From Santa Fe: Take I-25 South to the Cochiti exit (Exit 264/Hwy 16), turn right (West) on Hwy 16 and follow it approximately 10 miles to the intersection of Hwy 22. Turn left on Hwy 22 and proceed approximately 2 miles, through the town of Peña Blanca, to Arroyo Leyba Road. Turn right on Arroyo Leyba Rd, immediately after Romero's Store and proceed 0.5 miles to the MRGCD gate.
From Albuquerque: Take I-25 North to the Santo Domingo exit (Exit 259/Hwy 22), turn left (Southwest) and cross over I-25 onto Hwy 22 and follow it approximately 7 miles to Arroyo Leyba Road. Arroyo Leyba will be on your left, just before Romero's Store. Turn left and proceed 0.5 miles to the MRGCD gate.
