Oklahoma has more than 70 public hunting areas that cover 1.6 million acres of land. These areas range from open prairies, swampy bottomlands, and thick hardwood forests. There is a wide range of game to be sought after within our state and many types of terrain to encounter. We truly do have it all in Oklahoma. Oklahoma is the most eco-diverse state per mile. Hunters have the opportunities to bag antelope or mule deer in the panhandle of the state. Whitetail deer can be found throughout the entire state and are the highest sought after game species in Oklahoma. We have three sub-species of wild turkey which include the Merriam, Eastern, and most abundant the Rio Grande. Opportunities to harvest elk can be found in the Wichita Mountains and Cookson WMA. Black bears are sought after in the southeastern parts of the state. Waterfowl are also abundant in Oklahoma as well as upland birds such as dove, quail and pheasant.
