BHA New England chapter board member, Pat Saunders, recently took a family from Connecticut out in the great marsh, located in northern Massachusetts to learn to dog soft shell clams. Bob Fields won the trip last year at the rendezvous auction, but due to time constraints just made it up for the trip. Bob, his wife and two teenage daughters dug a few buckets of soft shell and razor clams in the marsh of the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and had a great time.

Last month Pat Saunders, working with Ella Webber from the refuge system hosted a learn to clam day. We introduced about 30 new people to digging soft shell, steamer clams in the Great Marsh. People learned a lot, connected to nature in a way they don’t usually get , and had a fantastic day in the mud. We look forward to collaborating with the refuge on many future clamming events.

On Tuesday October 21st, BHA New England chapter board member Pat Saunders, with the help of other members and BHA staffer Chris Borgatti testified to the joint natural resources committee. We testified approvingly of bills to loosen restrictions on Sunday hunting, and opposed a bill that would turn 30% of WMA land into preserves, an act that as hunters who are connected to our local landscape we feel could restrict our access to feed our families healthy food and restrict access to places we already hunt.
