"Here is your country. Cherish these natural wonders, cherish the natural resources, cherish the history and romance as a sacred heritage, for your children and your children's children. Do not let selfish men or greedy interests skin your country of its beauty, its riches or its romance."
– Theodore Roosevelt
LATEST
- On August 29th the Nebraska Chapter of BHA hosted our annual Trashy Cat event at Rockford Lake State Recreation Area. Six volunteers (seen right) filled up 12 large bags of trash improving the habitat and appearance of the area. Thank you volunteers for making Trashy Cat a success!

- As noted in many previous newsletters, the Chapter sent letters to the Central Platte Natural Resources District Board members asking them to open a piece of public land (B1 Reservoir) to some type of hunting. They declined without providing reasoning. We then sent a letter to their chair asking for reasoning but did not receive a response. So, some NEBHA Board members hope to attend a meeting to present the case on behalf of Nebraska’s public land hunters in the near future.
- Along similar lines, the chapter has been asking NGPC to have Hansen Memorial and Wanamaker Wildlife Management Areas opened up for any type of hunting (e.g., archery, youth…) for a year and a half. Indeed, NEBHA helped with background research on their history. The Wildlife Management Areas have been managed by NGPC as refuges. We were recently informed again there has been no change to their status. No reasoning was provided. Therefore, we have emailed the Chairperson of the Commission asking for some type of public hunting. Hopefully, the commissioners will authorize some type of hunting access to these public lands since other WMAs have been surplussed in the region by NGPC along the Interstate 80 corridor reducing access.
ACTION NEEDED
- We very much need membership engagement events in the Lincoln and Omaha areas where a majority of our members reside. If you are interested in hosting an event in those areas, such as a social (e.g., pint night, access rally….) or stewardship (e.g., trash pick up, fence removal,…) event please let us know!
- Please remember our state BHA Board is completely composed of volunteers; there are no paid members. Along those lines, we are seeking to fill an additional Board member slot from the northwestern portion of the state. So if you, or someone you know, might be willing to serve on the Board please email us!
If you know of others whom might like to receive this monthly update please forward them this LINK
