Nebraska Chapter 2025 Highlights

Nebraska BHA Chapter
/ Categories: Chapter News, State Issues
  • Nebraska BHA sent a response to the Bureau of Land Management opposing the proposed sale of our state BLM land without providing replacement property.

  • We worked with Lincoln County and NGPC to have the east minimum maintenance road into Wapiti WMA cleared of brush to improve access for hunters.

  • We met with Nebraska Game and Parks biologist Adam Kester in North Platte to discuss public hunting programs and partnerships to increase hunter access. We discussed ways that NEBHA could support public hunting sites with our volunteer projects.

  • The Chapter was interviewed on the Outdoor Connections with Rick Windham radio program in North Platte. Our chapter mission was discussed as well as our upcoming volunteer events.

  • We held our annual Trashy Cat event May 2-4th at Two Rivers State Recreation Area near Yutan. Several Board members and guests joined us for a weekend of camping, fishing, and trash cleanup.

  • The Chapter hosted a volunteer event at East Willow Island Wildlife Management Area. This WMA has large areas of invasive Chinese elm and eastern red cedar. Volunteers applied herbicide to a chop in the tree bark of the elm (called ‘hack and squirt’) and cut down red cedars.

  • The Chapter started a monthly email Newsletter in 2025.

  • Nebraska BHA sent a letter to the Niobrara Council strongly opposing Nebraska LR158 2025-26, which proposes the study of the transfer of the Niobrara National Scenic River from federal management to state management.

  • The Chapter hosted a volunteer effort with continuing work on fence removal at Halsey National Forest on August 2nd in association with the Nebraska Bowhunters Association Jamboree.

  • Nebraska BHA presented the inaugural annual PUBLIC LANDS HERO award to Adam Kester of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

  • The Chapter added 5 new Board members in 2025 and drafted a document on the history of NEBHA.

  • We alerted membership to provide input to the Department of Interior on the appreciation of hunting and fishing access on our U.S. Fish and Wildlife Refuges.

  • The Chapter hosted a tailgate event in Lincoln on November 28th before the Husker- Hawkeye game.

  • We worked with the Dawson County Road Supervisor to have the road ditches adjacent to East Willow Island WMA cleared of tires, appliances, and other trash in an effort to discourage further dumping on the WMA.

  • The Chapter alerted membership to the loss of over 300 acres of Wildlife Management Areas and ways to prevent further loss.

  • We encouraged NGPC to open up two Wildlife Management Areas, Wanamaker and Hansen Memorial, to some type of hunting. Our position is that these areas should not be operated as refuges.

  • We visited with NCORPE (public land in Lincoln County) about opening additional land for hunting and we are continuing those efforts.

  • NEBHA sent a letter to the Central Platte Natural Resource District about opening up a large piece of public land for archery hunting and turkey shotgun hunting. We will continue that effort.

  • The Chapter attended two regional fisheries meetings to advocate for improved access to Rockford Lake State Recreation Area and to open up two Wildlife Management areas in the Southwest Region to fish harvest.
