BHA Collegiate Program: A Year in Review

Next month, BHA's Collegiate Program will celebrate its sixth birthday. The program has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 2016 at the University of Montana, a program spearheaded by BHA's own Trey Curtiss. Despite a difficult start to the year with COVID still looming, 2021 has proven to be one of the program's most successful — thanks in no small part to the students at the helm. This year started out strong with the program's Field to Floor virtual series which educated ...

Hunting for Sustainability Ramps Up Efforts in Montana

BHA's Hunting for Sustainability program has its roots in Montana, so it's no surprise that the program has seen some of its most impactful achievements here. Working in tandem with the Collegiate Program, H4S gives college students to knowledge and skills to hunt safely, legally, and ethically. This semester, both programs celebrated the addition of a brand new H4S workshop focused on learning to hunt waterfowl at the Teller Wildlife Refuge. With an eye on expanding these programs to new ...

For You, Pops

This piece was originally featured in the spring 2021 edition of the Backcountry Journal. My father called my older brother and me into the room and told us to grab the blue notebook from the counter. He shakily clasped his glasses and opened the spiral revealing a list of the guns he owned. My brother and I both thought the conversation was going a completely different route, so we openly expressed: “What the hell, Dad? We thought this was going to be a serious conversation.” “You have to ...

A Freezer Too Full

Author: Joseph Drake

This piece was originally featured in the spring 2021 edition of the Backcountry Journal. I hear my wife begin recording videos for her fourth-grade class, but she is drowned out by the last of our wine deglazing the good bits from the cast iron in front of me. She has not seen her students for over a month, her heart breaking again with every email received. They ask when things will return to normal. I think of the undergraduate students’ essays I must grade after putting the browned neck ...

EVENT RECAP: Public Land Pack-Out with University of Montana BHA

Missoula staff joined University of Montana BHA students for a public land pack-out on Lolo National Forest as a part of BHA's goal to pack out 10,000 bags of trash from public lands in the month of September. Plant Creek is a chunk of U.S. Forest Service land that has experienced high rates of legal - albeit irresponsible - recreational shooting that has left the area in desperate need of attention. Shells, casings, electronics, cans, paper targets, and thousands of pounds of microtrash ...

Get To Know BHA's 2021 University of Louisville Scholar

Earlier this year we celebrated our first BHA scholar, Maurice Rodgers, at the North American Rendezvous in Missoula. Created and funded by Kentucky chapter leader and retired Col. Mike Abell, the BHA Scholarship is intended to go to a political science student who aspires to serve in public office, but who has little to no experience in the outdoors, hunting, or angling. The goal is to immerse future elected officials in our work and values as sportsmen and women in hopes that they take ...
