Meet BHA's 2022 University of Louisville Scholar: Angela Zuniga

Created and fully funded by Kentucky BHA chapter leader and retired colonel, Mike Abell and his wife Aline, the BHA Scholarship was first awarded in 2020 at the University of Louisville. The scholarship is intended to be awarded to a political science student who has aspirations to one day serve in public office but who has little to no experience with hunting, angling, or the outdoors. The intent is to immerse them in the BHA community where they will forge relationships and gain ...

For the Love of the Dog

Author: Beau Badon
Nearly every hunter has a different answer when asked why they hunt. Some do it mostly for the reward of meat, others for friendships and camaraderie, and others still ... for the love of the dog. Then, there are some dogs that come into a hunter’s life and completely change their “why.” This is about one of those special dogs. As college students, my wife and I couldn’t afford professional training, so we bought and read books, took advice when we could and tried to spend as much time on it ...

EVENT RECAP: Tree Plating at Gale Meadows Wildlife Management Area

We awoke to grim skies Saturday morning, but with raincoats in tow we were prepared to have a great day on our public lands, nonetheless. The hour drive was unexpectedly dry and when we arrived at Gale Meadows Wildlife Management Area we were greeted by a platoon of men and women ready to get to work. After a short walk through old forest cuts to promote early successional growth (which they did, successfully), we emerged from the canopy to the foundation of an old farmstead, which happened ...

From Rags to Tags

Author: Alex Gorman
When I moved to Minnesota in 2020 to start my graduate program in Natural Resources Science and Management at the University of Minnesota, I had high hopes, despite lockdowns and virtual learning, of making connections with people who could mentor me through the process of becoming a hunter and angler. I had the passion and determination; all I needed was a mentor, or as it turns out, a whole group of mentors who could channel that energy. What I found in Minnesota still feels like a ...

Lizards' Paradise

Author: Spencer Como
Last month, the Castleton Backcountry Hunters & Anglers Club worked with the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department to restore five-lined skink habitat on Vermont public lands. This project was supported by a grant the club received last fall through BHA's Public Land Owner Stewardship Fund. The five-lined skink, a threatened species in Vermont, is the only lizard species in the state. Unfortunately, this rare cold-blooded vertebrate is only reported to exist in a few towns in the state ...

Stevens Point Students Collaborate on Wetland Restoration Efforts

Authored by Jeffrey Edwards and edited by Brendan Woodall (U.S. FWS) The steam of freshly brewed coffee slowly rising from the BHA Stanley mug mimicked that of a freshly stoked campfire in the backcountry as we sat awaiting the arrival of our crew in the crisp Wisconsin air. Stoke the fire. A statement I’ve heard Mr. Land Tawney repeat countless times, but it still has a way of seeping deep into my soul and reverberates with every inch of my being. Every time I apply for a grant through S. ...

Sky to Skillet

Author: peter white
BHA's University of British Columbia Okanagan collegiate club is helping students overcome barriers to hunting. By Peter White The pursuits of hunting and fishing aren’t easy pastimes to incorporate into life on campus as a university student. For one thing, on a student’s budget you are continuously flipping a coin between a piece of new hunting gear and a required textbook. Plus, if you are new to campus, it can be hard to find accessible hunting and fishing areas and to meet like-minded ...

Full Circle

Collegiate club scholarship recipient goes from beginner hunter to mentor for others through BHA’s R3 work.   By Nicole Bealer I grew up in the suburbs of north Houston, far away from the Montana culture of field-to-table harvest in which I am now immersed. Though I loved wildlife and the outdoors, I did not come from a hunting family and was never exposed to the idea of fair-chase hunting on public lands. A burgeoning career in wildlife biology brought me to the Rockies, studying ...

Collegiate Program's Critter Classic

Last fall, BHA's Collegiate Program hosted their inaugural Critter Classic: part R3, part stewardship, part wild game cooking competition. Brought to life by Mississippi State University club president, Landon Carlton, the event was an opportunity to get new hunters afield and connect them to hunting through the lens of a local, sustainable, and often overlooked source of food: small game. Points were accumulated for each small game hunter or license, bag of trash packed out, and small game ...
