Why Hunt Mountain Merriam’s? (Part II)

Author: David Lien
If you, by chance, have already read Part I of this two-part screed, you generally know what to expect.[1] Hence, I won’t try to dissuade you from wasting another five or ten more minutes of your time on Part II. My hope, however, is that some of my turkey hunting experiences can enhance yours and hopefully shorten the learning curve for new turkey hunters. First, some turkey hunting statistics. Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s “2020 Spring Turkey Harvest Report” estimates that nearly 24,000 ...

Idaho public lands the setting for long-awaited lion hunt

Author: Aaron Towns
By Aaron Towns I waited a very long time for a chance at a mountain lion. From first hearing about a hunt like this and then learning about it and planning and saving and gearing up for it, years went by. Early this January, after already so much effort, my chance finally came.  Some of you know exactly what these pictures represent; how special they are. For others, perhaps they are surprising or difficult to understand. Either way, my tale of this hunting adventure is below. If you read ...

California Chapter Helps with Guzzler Repair Project

Volunteers from the California Chapter of BHA recently showed up to support the Society for the Conservation of Bighorn Sheep on a guzzler repair project in Southern California. They believe a big ram punched a hole in one of the old brittle guzzlers and the volunteer team showed up to replace both old tanks and more. The project was located in the Orocopia mountains, a remote desert portion of Riverside County managed by the Bureau of Land Management, and it involved heavy lifting, steep ...

Principles outlined to guide new elk management plan

Author: Montana BHA
Change is coming to elk hunting in Montana. What form those changes may take and when they may be implemented are still uncertain, but a group of volunteers has outlined some guiding principles for developing new guidance. The six principles were presented for approval to the Fish and Wildlife Commission at its Thursday meeting. “We felt we need to maintain hunting as the primary tool for elk population management, that does not mean it has to be done exactly as it is done now,” Ed Fryer, ...

The Emerald Mile by Kevin Fedarko

This title is part of BHA's Jim Posewitz Digital Library: Required Reading for Conservationists   If you have spent any time in the landscape of the American West you understand the significance of rivers and water in the sculpting of our actions, experiences and thoughts. While this book’s tale is centered around an incredible account of one single ride down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon, it is just an excuse to tell the epic tale of the river itself – a book of history ...

Basic Pickled Trout

Author: Scott DeSena
Surely, sometime this spring you’ll find yourself hauling a stringer full of trout. There are countless ways to prepare these fish. One of my go-to preparation methods is a simple pickled trout recipe. With a few basic ingredients and a little bit of time, you can easily create a delicious riverside snack or appetizer. While most any size trout will work with this recipe I’ve found that fish 17-in. or longer work best. Give it a shot the next time you have a few extra fillets on ...

For the last 30 years, Knowles Nelson has provided funds to: the WDNR, local governments, and nonprofits to protect and preserve lands in all of Wisconsin’s 72 counties. The number of projects and amount of land funded is unbelievable.    This program is especially impactful on Wisconsin’s hunters and anglers.
