New BHA Member Finds Community and ... Elk!

My name is Curtis Williamson, and I am a member of the BHA Armed Forces Initiative. I received orders to be stationed in Newport, Oregon, in December 2019, right before Covid became prevalent. Needless to say, I was lost as to what to do out here in Newport when things shut down as we were still very new to the area. I had a friend, who is now my hunting partner, tell me about BHA and all that you have do across the nation and I just had to join! What you all do is absolutely amazing ...

American Wildlife Conservation Partners Letters

In August of 2000, the Boone and Crockett Club hosted an historical conservation summit that has had a profound effect on the future of wildlife. This landmark meeting resulted in the creation of the American Wildlife Conservation Partners, a coalition of wildlife organizations focused on conservation, healthy fish and wildlife populations, and responsive management of important areas of habitat. As of 2021, AWCP has grown to 50 organizations, including Backcountry Hunters & Anglers. AWCP ...

EPLUS Could Be Up For Change in 2022

Author: Joel Gay
(Second in a series) Most western states have a “private land” program for elk hunting, but New Mexico’s EPLUS – the Elk Private Land Use System – is arguably the most liberal landowner tag allocation in the West. It’s no mystery why New Mexico has such a program. The big question is why does it operate the way it does. And more to the point: What can be done to change it? The basis of EPLUS is clear. The state Legislature in 1989 passed a law that says flatly: “The director of the ...

Help Pennsylvania BHA Fight for Sunday Hunting

Author: Thomas Plank
Pennsylvania Backcountry Hunters and Anglers believes that restrictions on Sunday hunting are an impediment to reasonable hunting access, and we support the effort made by Senator Dan Laughlin through the introduction of Senate Bill 607, which would allow the Pennsylvania Game Commission full authority to regulate hunting seasons seven days a week. Sunday hunting would double the amount of time that junior hunters can spend in the field without interfering with school and team sports, many ...

Conservation (& Conciliation)

Author: David Lien
Backcountry Hunters & Anglers was (and is) inspired by the political activism of Theodore Roosevelt, the Land Ethic of Aldo Leopold, the hunting ethics of David Petersen and the fiery oratory of Hal Herring. And from the start we have been focused on public lands and waters conservation (and conciliation). To this day we’re following closely in the footsteps of our nation’s greatest hunter-conservationist (and Medal of Honor recipient), Teddy Roosevelt.[1] In 1903 President Roosevelt and ...

The Minnesota Chapter of BHA had a successful clearing of the Blackhoof River WMA!
