North Dakota BHA 2023 Legislative Roundup

First and foremost, the reason for this blog is a sincere – and huge - THANK YOU!!! It’s been a long, arduous legislative session and we are overall happy with the way things have shaken out. TAKE ACTION: Oppose North Dakota HB 1151

UPDATE: 4/4/23- House Bill 1151 failed to pass with a Senate vote of 26 opposed, 21 in favor.  Likely the most contentious bill of the legislative session for ND BHA, the bill passed the house but was fortunately killed in the senate. The chapter opposed this bill mainly upon the premise that it would have stripped the ND Game & Fish Department of their authority to implement their game management plans. Thank you to our partner organizations and everyone that contacted their Representatives ...

Celebrating 60 Years of the National Grasslands

Author: Brock Wahl
Photo by Jack Pieper For us prairie dwellers who lack the large mountain ranges and vast expanses of the Rocky Mountain West, June 20th will be a day to celebrate. It marks the 60th birthday of our National Grasslands. The Grasslands’ story is one that is truly American: ripe with exploitation and natural disaster, an ensuing rescue effort, and prosperous success. The National Grasslands and portions of nearby Bureau of Land Management lands were once overgrazed, overhunted and abused ...

Thank you Don Magstadt

Author: Brock Wahl
In February, the North Dakota chapter was notified that BHA member Don Magstadt had passed away after a battle with cancer, and the family wanted to set up a memorial donation to honor his memory and the places he loved. NDBHA is extremely humbled and grateful for the generosity of the Magstadt family during this time. We would like to extend our sincerest thank you to Don, his wife Mary, and his three boys: Donnie, Christopher and Michael. Don’s reach and impact on the people he met was ...

Spring 2020 North Dakota Chapter update

NDBHA has high hopes for 2020.  We have doubled down on our planning efforts this year, so we can be involved in more events to grow our membership and increase our fundraising. We have also established a list of policy actions that we would like to push for moving forward so that we can proactively impact the 2021 legislative assembly. 2020 is also a gubernatorial election year for North Dakota, so we will be monitoring that throughout the year. We are on a constant search for active ...

Fall 2019 North Dakota Chapter News

The 2019 summer has proven to be both busy and trying for NDBHA.  We’ve dealt with multiple project cancellations due to weather and logistical issues. However, we were able to complete the Whitetail Picnic Area renovation in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service in July.  In addition to work projects, we’ve been refining our event formats to make better use of time and exposure. We’ve started to roll out new events like “Bows and Beers” to add a little flavor to our event calendar. ...

North Dakota BHA Opposes Public Land Transfer

North Dakota Representatives have introduced a bill (HB 1428) that could jeopardize traditional public hunting, fishing, camping and hiking access on over 400,000 acres of public land, including Army Corps of Engineers-held shorelines on Lake Sakakawea and Lake Oahe. For decades, the shorelines of these lakes have been open for public recreation. The representatives who introduced this bill are seeking to transfer this land to the state, to the detriment of sportsmen and women. The diverse ...
