Crazy Mountain access, trails dispute argued in federal court

Author: Montana BHA
The Custer Gallatin National Forest’s rights to access historic trails in the Crazy Mountains “died” because landowners successfully blocked access denying the public for five years, Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Smith argued in a Billings federal court on Tuesday. Under Montana law, a prescriptive easement – in this case public access across private land – requires “open, exclusive, notorious, hostile, adverse, continuous and uninterrupted use” for a five-year period. “The Forest ...

Southeast Wins on Hunting Buffer

Author: Josh Kaywood
In November of 2021 the Southeast Chapter was made aware of a proposed hunting buffer zone in Mississippi’s Malmaison WMA.  This proposed rule was intended to limit access to the public hunting area in a way that would benefit the members of the neighboring private hunting club.  The Southeast chapter was concerned by the proposed rule for two reasons. The first concern is obvious in that it would reduce a considerable amount of public acreage to world class duck hunting ground. Their second ...

The Colorado Bill to Ban Lion, Lynx, and Bobcat Hunting

On the first day of the Colorado Legislature’s 2022 session, a bill (SB22-031) that would ban hunting lion, bobcat, and lynx was introduced in the Senate with sponsorship of four Legislators. Collegiate Program's Critter Classic

Last fall, BHA's Collegiate Program hosted their inaugural Critter Classic: part R3, part stewardship, part wild game cooking competition. Points were accumulated for each small game hunter or license, bag of trash packed out, and small game ...

Governor Removes Another Qualified Commissioner

Author: Joel Gay
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham this week removed State Game Commissioner Jeremy Vesbach, apparently because he has repeatedly stood up for New Mexico resident hunters and anglers. She notified him Tuesday morning that he was out, even though he still had a year left in his term. “I think the governor was looking for someone who would ride the fence,” Vesbach told NMBHA. “That’s not me.” Since he was appointed in 2019, Vesbach has been a fierce advocate for New Mexico hunters and anglers. He has ...
