• Nebraska BHA joined up with Nebraska Game and Parks personnel to set the new boundaries and hang signage for a piece of new Open Fields and Waters public access ground. The property is in the Wildcat Hills south of Gering. This new project opens up roughly 1200 acres of public access OFW ground! Thanks to Board member Zane Jaramillo (see his video on our Facebook page).

• As noted in several previous newsletters, the Chapter has sent letters to the Central Platte Natural Resources District Board members asking them to open a piece of public land (B1 Reservoir) to some type of  hunting. So far they have declined. We have sent a letter asking for their reasoning and are weighing whether it would be worthwhile to attend one of their meetings to go over NEBHA goals and responsibilities.

  

• NEBHA volunteers evaluated last summer’s ‘hack and squirt’ volunteer project at East Willow Island WMA (right). Kill was very good on exotic trees of small and medium diameter but incomplete on larger individuals (>24” diameter).  Also the county roads department ( notified by NEBHA) did an excellent job of removing the large appliances from the ditch to the north (thank you Dawson County!) and very little trash has since been left at that WMA.

    Volunteers then moved down the road to the east and removed trash from West Cozad WMA        (above left). 

• The Chapter has been asking to have Hansen Memorial and Wanamaker Wildlife Management  Areas opened up for any type of hunting (e.g., archery, youth…) for a year and a half. Indeed we helped with background research on their history. We circled back by asking NGPC and have not received a response.     

ACTION NEEDED

• We very much need membership engagement events in the Lincoln and Omaha areas where a majority of our members reside. If you are interested in hosting an event in those areas, such as a social (e.g., pint night, access rally….)  or stewardship (e.g., trash pick up, fence removal,…) event please let us know!

• Please remember our state BHA Board is completely composed of volunteers; there are no paid members. Along those lines, we are seeking to fill an additional Board member slot from the northwestern portion of the state. So if you, or someone you know, might be willing to serve on the Board please email us!
