On Friday, August 21st, the Washington Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers completed another habitat enhancement project at Elk Forge Unit 19 near Greenwater, Washington. The project included three volunteers: the WA Chapter's Region Conservation and Policy Coordinator, Tom MacDonald, and Laurel from Conservation Northwest.

 

 

Earlier this spring, the Elk Forge Unit underwent a prescribed burn. Since then, bracken fern has become overgrown in portions of the unit, limiting the growth of more desirable native plants and forbs that provide important forage for elk.

 

Our team focused on a concentrated area within the unit, removing the overgrown bracken fern to create space for more beneficial plants and forbs to flourish. By improving the availability and quality of forage, this work will help enhance elk habitat in the Greenwater area.
