We had a very successful and awesome trail closure on August 23, 2025 outside Durango. We had 5 BHA volunteers and 3 BLM Rangers join us. We hiked in about 1 mile on an authorized trail then got to work, ripping up the unauthorized trail with hand tools then covering it up thoroughly with debris from the surrounding area for about 100yards on each end.

Then we found whatever we could along the way to block/cover/ hide the rail in between the two ends of the trail to further discourage reopening of it. About 100yards in from each end of the trail the BLM drove route closed signs into the ground and they hope to have surveillance with their BLM Law Enforcement division pursuing anyone who ignores the closures.

The trail we closed was a connector trail between two authorized trails, one being a loop along the bottom of the mountain and the other being in top of it. This connector ran through critical winter range habitat and through peregrine nesting sites (both have seasonal closures).
It was a great event and everyone involved took home a new BHA Habitat Stewardship hat!
