About the Position 

BHA is seeking an individual with the talent, passion and initiative to advance BHA's mission, and collaborate with Bureau of Land Management (BLM) staff to organize and implement meaningful fish and wildlife habitat conservation and restoration work on BLM land. The Habitat Stewardship Coordinator will work directly with BLM and BHA staff to improve habitat permeability through fence removal, inventory and modifications in areas identified as high priority by the BLM. The Habitat Stewardship Coordinator will report directly to the BHA Regional Stewardship & Habitat Connectivity Manager, and work with BHA volunteers and partner organizations to execute meaningful field work with a landscape level impact. 

The ideal candidate will work with a high level of autonomy and be flexible and organized in a fast-paced and ever-changing work environment. They will be able to quickly analyze and solve problems, collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders, prepare professional reports that accurately document activities, adhere to standards of confidentiality, and communicate effectively. The successful candidate will represent BHA with integrity and champion BHA’s mission and values in all facets of their work. 


Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Develop relationships with BLM field offices and identify projects for fence removal, inventory and modifications in BLM priority areas. 

  • In coordination with BHA staff and chapters, inspire, mobilize and support volunteers to assist in the execution of public land stewardship projects. 

  • Organize and recruit volunteers and partners to participate in field days. 

  • Deliver volunteer support and training to increase efficiency, ensure volunteer safety and compliance with BHA/BLM policies, and empower volunteers to meaningfully contribute. 

  • Promote the people and places positively impacted through stewardship work with photo/video capture and storytelling through BHA’s platforms and community outreach opportunities. 

  • Oversee management of stewardship contractors, as needed. 

  • Contribute to organization and documentation of stewardship grant deliverables, budget and reporting. 

  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisory staff. 


Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Preferably a hunter and/or angler. 

  • Must believe in, and demonstrate a commitment to, BHA's work and mission (please address in cover letter). 

  • Willing to work flexible hours and travel across the region up to 50% of the time, including periodic extended travel to project sites. 

  • Must conduct work with integrity and a collaborative spirit, while focusing on developing partnerships, building trust, and fostering strong professional relationships. 

  • Must be capable of managing stewardship grant deliverables, budget and reporting. 

  • A minimum of three years of relevant experience required. 

  • Must work and interact with sportsmen and women, and have a general knowledge of current and historical conservation issues. 

  • Must be an innovative and resourceful self-starter who can work with minimal supervision. 

  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. 

  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds and have a valid U.S. driver’s license. 

  • This position requires a reliable personal vehicle capable of travel to and from project sites, which may necessitate use of four-wheel drive. 

  • BHA provides mileage reimbursement, first aid kits and first aid training (if candidate lacks a current certification). 


Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Previous experience working with public land management agencies and/or nonprofit volunteers 

  • Previous experience in fence construction and/or modification 

  • B.S. in natural resources or wildlife-related degree. 

  • Previous experience managing grant funding for stewardship. 

  • Previous experience managing contracts. 

  • Previous experience with National Environmental Policy Act. 

  • Proven understanding of state and federal land management agency planning and project management processes. 

  • Experience developing social media content 

  • BHA offers a stimulating and fun work environment, health insurance and a generous leave package including annual time off for backcountry hunting/fishing, and discounts with BHA corporate partners. 


Compensation: $57,000/year, position is limited to a one-year term, with the opportunity for extension, dependent upon funding. No relocation stipend is provided.
